মহাভারত (সংস্কৃত: महाभारत) সংস্কৃত ভাষায় রচিত প্রাচীন ভারতের দুটি প্রধান মহাকাব্যের অন্যতম (অপরটি হল রামায়ণ)। এই মহাকাব্যটি হিন্দুশাস্ত্রের ইতিহাস অংশের অন্তর্গত।
মহাভারত-এর মূল উপজীব্য বিষয় হল কৌরব ও পাণ্ডবদের গৃহবিবাদ এবং কুরুক্ষেত্র যুদ্ধের পূর্বাপর ঘটনাবলি। তবে এই আখ্যানভাগের বাইরেও দর্শন ও ভক্তির অধিকাংশ উপাদানই এই মহাকাব্যে সংযোজিত হয়েছে। উদাহরণস্বরূপ বলা যায়, ধর্ম, অর্থ, কাম ও মোক্ষ – এই চার পুরুষার্থ-সংক্রান্ত একটি আলোচনা (১২।১৬১) সংযোজিত হয়েছে এই গ্রন্থে। মহাভারত-এর অন্তর্গত অন্যান্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ রচনা ও উপাখ্যানগুলি হল ভগবদ্গীতা, দময়ন্তীর উপাখ্যান, রামায়ণ-এর একটি সংক্ষিপ্ত পাঠান্তর ইত্যাদি। এগুলিকে মহাভারত-রচয়িতার নিজস্ব সৃষ্টি বলে মনে করা হয়।
প্রচলিত বিশ্বাস অনুযায়ী, মহাভারত-এর রচয়িতা ব্যাসদেব। অনেক গবেষক এই মহাকাব্যের ঐতিহাসিক বিকাশ ও রচনাকালীন স্তরগুলি নিয়ে গবেষণা করেছেন। অধুনা প্রাপ্ত পাঠটির প্রাচীনতম অংশটি মোটামুটি ৪০০ খ্রিষ্টপূর্বাব্দ নাগাদ রচিত হয়।[১] মহাভারতের মূলপাঠটি তার বর্তমান রূপটি পরিগ্রহ করে গুপ্তযুগের প্রথমাংশে (খ্রিষ্টীয় চতুর্থ শতাব্দী)।[২] মহাভারত কথাটির অর্থ হল ভরত বংশের মহান উপাখ্যান। গ্রন্থেই উল্লিখিত হয়েছে যে ভারত নামে ২৪,০০০ শ্লোকবিশিষ্ট একটি ক্ষুদ্রতর আখ্যান থেকে মহাভারত মহাকাব্যের কাহিনিটি বিস্তার লাভ করে।[৩]
মহাভারত-এ এক লক্ষ শ্লোক ও দীর্ঘ গদ্যাংশ রয়েছে। এই মহাকাব্যের শব্দসংখ্যা প্রায় আঠারো লক্ষ। মহাভারত মহাকাব্যটির আয়তন ইলিয়াড ও ওডিসি কাব্যদ্বয়ের সম্মিলিত আয়তনের দশগুণ এবং রামায়ণ-এর চারগুণ।[৪][৫]
রচনার ইতিহাস ও গঠন
প্রচলিত বিশ্বাস অনুযায়ী, ব্যাসদেব এই মহাকাব্যের রচয়িতা। তিনি এই আখ্যানকাব্যের অন্যতম চরিত্রও বটে। মহাভারত-এর প্রথম অংশের বর্ণনা অনুযায়ী, ব্যাসদেবের অনুরোধে তাঁর নির্দেশনা মতো গণেশ এই মহাকাব্য লিপিবদ্ধ করার দায়িত্ব নেন। গণেশ একটি শর্তে এই কাজে রাজি হয়েছিলেন। তাঁর শর্ত ছিল ব্যাস একবারও না থেমে সমগ্র মহাকাব্যটি আবৃত্তি করবেন। ব্যাস রাজি হন, কিন্তু তিনিও পাল্টা শর্ত দেন যে গণেশও প্রতিটি শ্লোকের অর্থ না বুঝে লিপিবদ্ধ করতে পারবেন না।
মহাভারত মহাকাব্যটি গল্পের মধ্য গল্প শৈলীতে রচিত। এই শৈলী ভারতের অনেক ধর্মীয় ও ধর্মনিরপেক্ষ রচনার বৈশিষ্ট্য। অর্জুনের প্রপৌত্র জনমেজয়ের নিকট এই কাহিনি পাঠ করে শোনান ব্যাসদেবের শিষ্য বৈশম্পায়ন। অনেক বছর পরে, জনমেজয়ের নিকট বৈশম্পায়নের এই মহাভারত কথনের ঘটনাটি পেশাদার কথক উগ্রশ্রবা সৌতি কর্তৃক ঋষিদের একটি যজ্ঞসমাবেশে কথিত হয়।
সংক্ষিপ্ত কাহিনি
কাহিনীর শুরু প্রকৃতপক্ষে ভরত রাজার সময় থেকে। কিন্তু বহু পুস্তকে রাজা শান্তনুর সময় থেকে কাহিনী শুরু করা হয়। পিতৃসত্য পালনের জন্য শান্তনুর পুত্র দেবব্রত আজীবন বিবাহ করেন নি ও রাজসিংহাসনে বসেন নি। এই ভীষণ প্রতিজ্ঞান জন্য তাঁকে ভীষ্ম বলা হয়। ভীষ্মের কণিষ্ঠ ভ্রাতা বিচিত্রবীর্য রাজত্ব চালান তাঁর ছিল দুই পুত্র - ধৃতরাষ্ট্র ও পাণ্ডু। জ্যেষ্ঠ ধৃতরাষ্ট্র জন্মান্ধ হওয়ায় পাণ্ডু রাজা হন। কিন্তু পাণ্ডুর অকালমৃত্যুর পর রাজত্ব ধৃতরাষ্ট্রের তত্বাবধানে আসে। সেখান থেকেই শুরু হয় মহাভারতের মহাবিরোধ। কে রাজা হবেন - পাণ্ডুর পুত্র, না ধৃতরাষ্ট্রের ? শুরু হয় হিংসা, ষড়যন্ত্র, কপট দ্যূতক্রীড়া বনবাস ইত্যাদি । কাহিনীর পরিণতি অষ্টাদশদিবসব্যাপী এক সংহারক যুদ্ধ - যাতে ভারতবর্ষের বহু রাজার প্রাণ যায় । মৃত্যু হয় ধৃতরাষ্টের জ্যেষ্ঠপুত্র দুর্যোধন সহ মোট শতপুত্রের। শেষে রাজত্ব পান জ্যেষ্ঠ পাণ্ডুপুত্র যুধিষ্ঠির। সমস্ত কাহিনীতে ভগবান শ্রীকৃষ্ণ মুখ্য চালকের ভূমিকায় থাকেন। এই কাহিনীর আধ্যাত্মিক সারাংশ হল ধর্মের জয় ও অধর্মের নাশ।
