আদি বৌদ্ধধর্ম[১][২] হলো 'গোড়ার দিকের বৌদ্ধধর্ম'[৩] বা 'মূল বৌদ্ধধর্ম',[৪][টীকা ১] এবং বৌদ্ধধর্মের ইতিহাসে অন্তত দুটি স্বতন্ত্র সময়কালকে বোঝায়:

  1. প্রাক-সাম্প্রদায়িক বৌদ্ধধর্ম: গৌতম বুদ্ধ কর্তৃক প্রতিষ্ঠিত শিক্ষা[৪][টীকা ২] এবং সন্ন্যাসীর সংগঠন ও কাঠামোকে বোঝায়।[৫] এটি তাত্ত্বিকভাবে বিভিন্ন আদি বৌদ্ধ সম্প্রদায়ের বিকাশের আগে, ২৫০ খ্রিস্টপূর্বাব্দের কাছাকাছি অস্তিত্বের বৌদ্ধধর্ম।[৬][৭] এটি আদিম বৌদ্ধধর্ম নামেও পরিচিত। [৮]
  2. আদি বৌদ্ধ সম্প্রদায়: অশোকের রাজত্বকালে বা পরে বিভক্ত বৌদ্ধধর্মকে বোঝায়।[৯]
