ধ্রুপদি কিংবদন্তি অনুযায়ী, হোমার (প্রাচীন গ্রিক: Ὅμηρος, Hómēros) ছিলেন এক প্রাচীন গ্রিক মহাকাব্যিক কবি। তিনি ইলিয়াড ও ওডিসি মহাকাব্য এবং হোমারীয় স্তোত্রাবলির রচয়িতা। হোমারের মহাকাব্যগুলি থেকেই পাশ্চাত্য সাহিত্যধারাটির সূচনা হয়েছিল। কথাসাহিত্য ও সাহিত্যের সাধারণ ইতিহাসে এই দুই মহাকাব্যের প্রভাব অপরিসীম।

হোমারের সময়কাল নিয়ে প্রাচীনকালেই যথেষ্ট বিতর্ক ছিল; আজও আছে। হেরোডোটাসের মতে, হোমার হেরোডোটাসের জন্মের চারশো বছর আগে অর্থাৎ ৮৫০ খ্রিষ্টপূর্বাব্দ নাগাদ বিদ্যমান ছিলেন। কিন্তু অন্যান্য প্রাচীন সূত্রে তাঁকে ট্রয় যুদ্ধের অনেক নিকটবর্তী সময়ের (১১৯৪-১১৮৪ খ্রিষ্টপূর্বাব্দ) মানুষ মনে করা হয়েছে।

আধুনিক গবেষকেরা "হোমারের সময়কাল" বলতে কাব্যরচনার সূচনাকাল ও ব্যক্তির জীবনকাল উভয়কেই একযোগে বুঝিয়েছেন। তাঁরা এই বিষয়ে একমত যে, "ইলিয়াড ও ওডিসি খ্রিষ্টপূর্ব নবম শতাব্দীর একেবারে শেষ কাল অথবা অষ্টম শতাব্দীর রচনা এবং ইলিয়াড ওডিসি মহাকাব্যের পূর্বে, সম্ভবত একই দশকে রচিত হয়েছিল।" অর্থাৎ শেষোক্ত বইটি হেসিয়ডের পূর্বেই রচিত হয়। ইলিয়ড পাশ্চাত্য সাহিত্যের প্রাচীনতম রচনা। বিগত কয়েক দশক ধরে কোনো কোনো গবেষক খ্রিষ্টপূর্ব সপ্তম শতাব্দীকে হোমারের রচনাকাল মনে করছেন। যাঁরা মনে করেন, হোমারীয় কাব্যধারাটি এক দীর্ঘ সময় ধরে গড়ে উঠেছিল, তাঁরা এই কাব্যের রচনা আরও পরে হয়েছিল বলে মতপ্রকাশ করেছেন। গ্রেগরি ন্যাগির মতে, এই রচনাগুলি সুসংহত আকার নেয় খ্রিষ্টপূর্ব ষষ্ঠ শতাব্দীতে। হোমার ঐতিহাসিক ব্যক্তিত্ব কিনা, সেই প্রশ্নটি নিজেই "হোমারীয় প্রশ্ন" নামে পরিচিত। ধ্রুপদি প্রাচীন যুগে রচিত হোমারের কোনো বিশ্বাসযোগ্য জীবনী পাওয়া যায় না। তাঁর কবিতাগুলিও বহু শতাব্দীর মৌখিক গল্পকথন ও একটি সুগঠিত কাব্যরচনা ব্যবস্থার মিশ্রণ। মার্টিন ওয়েস্টের মতে, "হোমার কোনো ঐতিহাসিক কবির নাম নয়, বরং কাল্পনিকভাবে সৃষ্ট একটি নাম।"

আলফ্রেড হিউবেক বলেছেন, হোমারের রচনার গঠন-সংক্রান্ত প্রভাব সমগ্র গ্রিক সংস্কৃতির বিকাশে গভীর প্রভাব বিস্তার করেছিল। অনেক গ্রিকই তাঁকে তাঁদের জাতীয় সংগঠক মনে করেন।
