বোধোদয় হলো 'বোধি ও বিমুত্তি' এর বৌদ্ধ পরিভাষা। বোধি (/ˈboʊdi/; সংস্কৃত: बोधि, পালি: bodhi) অর্থ বুদ্ধের জ্ঞান বা প্রজ্ঞা বা জাগ্রত বুদ্ধি।[ওয়েব ১] মৌখিক মূল বুদ্ধ- মানে "জাগ্রত করা", এবং এর আভিধানিক অর্থ জাগ্রত হওয়ার কাছাকাছি। যদিও বুদ্ধি শব্দটি অন্যান্য ভারতীয় দর্শন এবং ঐতিহ্যগুলিতেও ব্যবহৃত হয়, তবে এর সবচেয়ে সাধারণ ব্যবহার বৌদ্ধধর্মের প্রসঙ্গে। বিমুক্তি হলো বন্ধন এবং বাধা থেকে মুক্তি। প্রজ্ঞা,[১][২] বিদ্যা; নির্বাণ, এবং বুদ্ধত্ব প্রাপ্তি বোঝাতে শব্দটি বৌদ্ধ পরিভাষা ও ধারণা হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
বুদ্ধের জাগরণ ঠিক কী গঠন করেছিল তা অজানা। এতে হয়তো সেই জ্ঞান জড়িত ছিল যে মননশীলতা এবং ধ্যানের সংমিশ্রণে মুক্তি অর্জিত হয়েছিল, যা লোভের উদ্ভব ও অবসানের বোঝার জন্য প্রয়োগ করা হয়েছিল। ধ্যান ও অন্তর্দৃষ্টির (প্রজ্ঞা) মধ্যে সম্পর্ক বৌদ্ধধর্ম অধ্যয়নের মূল সমস্যা, এবং এটি বৌদ্ধ অনুশীলনের অন্যতম মৌলিক বিষয়।
