বাংলা ফন্ট দেখায় সমস্যা
আমি গত কয়েকদিন ধরে দেখছি যে বাংলা উইকিপিডিয়া ফন্ট এর সমস্যা হচ্ছে। যখন সাইট লোড হতে থাকে, তখন ফন্ট ঠিকই ভাল দেখায় অর্থাৎ সোলাইমানলিপি দেখায়। কিন্তু সাইট লোড শেষ হলেই ফন্ট ভাংগা দেখায়। ফন্ট এর একটি উদাহরন এই ইমেজ লিঙ্ক এ দেখালাম। এটি Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer এ এরকম দেখায়, Safari, Maxthon দিয়ে দেখিনি। শুধু আমার পিসিতেই নয়, অন্য একজনের পিসিতেও দেখলাম এরকম সমস্যা। উল্লেখ্য, আমি Font Fixer দিয়ে ডিফল্ট ফন্ট Solaiman Lipi দিয়ে রেখেছি। এর কি কোন সমাধান আছে?
- এটার কারণ বাংলা উইকিপিডিয়ায় ওয়েব ফন্ট এনাবল করা হয়েছে তাই লোড হবার পর এমবেডেড ফন্টটি লোড হচ্ছে। আপনি লগইন করা না থাকলে ডান পাশের কোণায় ‘প্রবেশ/নতুন অ্যাকাউন্ট’-এর পাশে ফন্টের একটি অপশন পাবেন সেখান থেকে এটি বন্ধ করে দিতে পারেন। যদি লগইন করা থাকেন তবে, আমার পছন্দ --> অবয়ব -এ যান, এবং ‘উচ্চতর অপশন’ অংশের নিচে থাকা ‘Enable font embedding (WebFonts)’ অপশনটির পাশে থাকা টিক তুলে দিয়ে সেভ করুন। সমাধান হয়ে যাবে আশা করি। :) — তানভির • আলাপ • ১৩:৫৬, ৯ জানুয়ারি ২০১২ (ইউটিসি)
- উইকিপিডিয়াতে কিছু দিন আগে ওয়েব ফন্ট সংযোজন করা হয়েছে। যার ফলে এখন কোনো কম্পিউটারে বাংলা ইউনিকোড ফন্ট ইন্টল করা না থাকলেও উইকিপিডিয়াতে বাংলা লেখা ঠিকভাবে দেখা যাবে। বাংলা ছাড়াও আরও অনেকগুলো ভাষার জন্যই এই ওয়েব ফন্ট চালু করা আছে। তবে আপনি এই ওয়েব ফন্ট বন্ধ করে আগের মত ব্রাউজারে নির্ধারিত ফন্টের মাধ্যমে উইকিপিডিয়া দেখতে পারবেন। তবে লগইন করা না থাকলেই কেবল এটি কাজ করবে, লগইন করা না থাকলে ওয়েবফন্টে নির্ধারিত ফন্ট আবার সক্রিয় হবে।

Glory of Bangla
As you are aware, I have been having a series of discussions with few Bengali Wikipedians as part of my work with Wikimedia Foundation to support Bengali community and to promote Bengali projects. I had shared these discussions here for Bengali and after my conversations with all other Indic language Wikipedians, I had shared a summary of my discussions here.
The next stage of my work has been to provide specific suggestions to each language community on the respective village pumps and to invite community discussions around these. These suggestions are specific to that particular language - because each language community has its own characteristics and context. Bengali has a very rich cultural heritage and a great deal of pride in the mother tongue. These are always very powerful ingredients for healthy communities and strong projects. Here are some thoughts that you might want to consider and discuss for your community.
Community Building - Wiki Meetups for Better Community Communications & Relationships
Physical meetings between Bengali wikipedians is a really strong way to help the growth of Bengali projects. I know in Bangladesh we have many events to support this. It will be good if this can be replicated in Bengali speaking regions (especially West Bengal and NE region of India) of India also. As you know meetups connect us with like-minded people, build friendships, help share ideas and plan initiatives. For small communities, there is always the feeling that we are all alone - and meetups help to correct this perception and this is a source of inspiration. Physical meetings between wikipedians is essential to grow a healthy wiki community in any indic language wikipedia. It is encouraging to see that there is a meet up planned in Kolkatta to celebrate 11th anniversary. Please plan more meetups. Please do them more regularly in Kolkata / Howrah but also towns like Asansol, Durgapur, Kharagpur, Bardhaman, Kalimpong and Darjeeling. I will help in every possible way to support you; just let me know what help you need.
Community Building - Outreach
You are already doing as much as you can. But still let me some important points. To encourage users to start editing in wiki some of us need to take initiative for some outreach activities. Outreach can be of 3 types - offline, online, and using media.
Offline Outreach: Wiki workshops
Wiki workshop is the best way to attract more users to wikipedia. We should start doing more workshops to attract more users to wiki editing. Community members need to come forward - and it is very nice to see a Wiki Academy is being planned at Netaji Subhash Engineering College in January itself. I am happy that many of you are already coming forward. Please continue to plan and conduct more outreach events. I donot know if Kolkatta Book Fair is possible or not now but if there is anything that can be done, that would really amazing.
Online Outreach: Social Networking
I do not need to tell Bengali wiki community about this. Community know the importance of using social networking sites for outreach. You are doing this effectively. Please continue doing that. And find more innovative ways of reaching more Bengali speakers using various channels.
Online Outreach: Bengali Blogs
Use Bengali blogs to reach out to the Bengali online community. They are the people whom you can easily be converted to Wikipedians since they know Bengali typing and have a flare for Bengali computing. You need to just tell them about the importance of Wikipedia. It would be very useful to get in touch with popular bloggers and ask them to inform their readers about Bengali Wikipedia and other wiki projects, encourage more people to consider editing and point interested people.
Bengali Newspapers & TV Channels
Bengali newspapers and TV channels have massive reach. Can we establish contacts with journalists and ask for their support in covering Bengali Wikipedia. Journalists always look for news items that are directly relevant to their audience and something like Bengali Wikipedia crossing 25,000 articles is a perfect story. Any further achievement of Bengali community like when you cross the 100 active editor mark, and the 500 editor mark, when you do an offline release etc. - will all get you good media coverage. This will help in building the community, increasing motivation of existing editors and attract new editors.
Community Building - Cross-Border Interactions for richer Community
A unique feature of Bengali community is that it exists atleast in 2 countries - Bangladesh & India. The community in Bangladesh is actually much larger and more active than the one in India. It would be really nice if we can plan some programs to increase the number of wikipedians contributing to Bengali from India. Communities are built around language affinities and not political boundaries. Everyone shares a passion for Bengali regardless of which side of the border they might live in. Things that can be considered are making the Bangla mailing list more active so that the news from Bangla wiki will reach more Bangla people who are interested in Bangla wiki projects, as well exploring if wikimedians from both countries can meet up physically or virtually (through video on google+ hangouts.) Maybe meetups can be conducted at the same time in Kolkata and Dhaka and have some part of it as a video link with the each other? Would it not be so wonderful for this to take place?
Another even more ambitious idea is to see if there are ways that the communities can collaborate on jointly on all the above ideas. Wikiprojects can be worked on regardless of which country an editor is living in. Would it not be a great thing is some Bengali wikipedians from Bangladesh can come and support Bengali community in West Bengal to conduct outreach events? A grant may be applied for the Wikimedia Foundation for such cross-border co-operation. (I know there might be some visa issues but we can always try and see if we can help out.) Let me know if you need any support on this.
With regard to my activities, I am based in India but my objective is to support Indic language communities regardless of where they live. I will not impose myself on any other country, but if Wikimedia Bangladesh who works on promoting Bengali projects in Bangladesh and an established local chapter, needs any help, do reach out to me and I will do everything I can for you. Please treat this as an open invitation.
Can I request as many Bengali Wikipedians to share you thoughts about these ideas. Do you think they are the right ideas for Bengali? If so and if not, why? Would you suggest any alternate ideas? If you like these ideas, which ones would you like to work on? Is there any help you need? Would you be interested in getting connected to other community members who might also be interested? Please share your ideas.

Announcing Wikipedia 1.19 beta
Wikimedia Foundation is getting ready to push out 1.19 to all the WMF-hosted wikis. As we finish wrapping up our code review, you can test the new version right now on beta.wmflabs.org. For more information, please read the release notes or the start of the final announcement.
The following are the areas that you will probably be most interested in:
- Faster loading of javascript files makes dependency tracking more important.
- New common*.css files usable by skins instead of having to copy piles of generic styles from MonoBook or Vector's css.
- The default user signature now contains a talk link in addition to the user link.
- Searching blocked usernames in block log is now clearer.
- Better timezone recognition in user preferences.
- Improved diff readability for colorblind people.
- The interwiki links table can now be accessed also when the interwiki cache is used (used in the API and the Interwiki extension).
- More gender support (for instance in logs and user lists).
- Language converter improved, e.g. it now works depending on the page content language.
- Time and number-formatting magic words also now depend on the page content language.
- Bidirectional support further improved after 1.18.
Report any problems on the labs beta wiki and we'll work to address them before they software is released to the production wikis.
