ভাষাবিদদের মতে ভাষার মৃত্যু বলতে বোঝায় যখন কোন ভাষা তার শেষ বক্তাকেও হারায়।[১][২]) তবে ঐ ভাষাটি বক্তার প্রধান ভাষা বা মাতৃভাষা হতে হবে। ভাষার মৃত্যু অনেক ক্ষেত্রে বিভিন্ন উপভাষা এবং ভাষাকে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত করে। ভাষার মৃত্যু এবং ভাষা হারিয়ে যাওয়ার মাঝে পার্থক্য রয়েছে।[৩]

ভাষার মৃত্যুর প্রকারভেদ[সম্পাদনা]

Language shift can be the result of linguicide, in which ethnic group members no longer learn their heritage language as their first language.

ভাষার মৃত্যুর সুস্পষ্ট কারণ নিম্নলিখিত যে কোন একটি হতে পারে:

  • ক্রমশ ভাষার মৃত্যু।
  • নিম্ন থেকে উচ্চ ভাষার মৃত্যু: যখন ভাষা পরিবর্তন একটি নিম্ন স্তরের পরিবেশে শুরু হয় যেমন বাড়ি থেকে।
  • উচ্চ-থেকে-নিম্ন ভাষার মৃত্যু: যখন ভাষা পরিবর্তন উচ্চ পর্যায়ের পরিবেশে শুরু হয় যেমন রাষ্ট্রের সরকারের থেকে।
  • ভিত্তিগত ভাষার মৃত্যু।
  • ভাষার মৃত্যু (এছাড়াও আকস্মিক মৃত্যু, ভাষার গণহত্যা, শারীরিক ভাষার মৃত্যু, জৈবিক ভাষার মৃত্যু নামে পরিচিত)।

সবচেয়ে সাধারণ যে প্রক্রিয়ায় ভাষার মৃত্যু ঘটে তা হল যখন কোন এক ভাষার ব্যবহারকারী একটি সম্প্রদায় অন্য কোন ভাষায় দ্বিভাষিক হয়ে যায়। ধীরে ধীরে দ্বিতীয় ভাষার প্রতি অনুরক্ত হয়ে তারা তাদের মূল ভাষা ব্যবহার করা ছেড়ে দেয়, এই আত্তীকরণ প্রক্রিয়াটি স্বেচ্ছায় হতে পারে অথবা একটি জনসংখ্যার উপর চাপিয়ে দেয়া হতে পারে। কিছু ভাষার জনগোষ্ঠী, বিশেষ করে আঞ্চলিক বা সংখ্যালঘু ভাষার জনগোষ্ঠী তাদের ভাষা অর্থনৈতিক বা উপযোগিতার উপর ভিত্তি করে নিজ ভাষা পরিত্যাগ করে, বৃহত্তর উপযোগ বা প্রতিপত্তি সম্পন্ন ভাষা গ্রহণের সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে পারে। এই প্রক্রিয়ায় ভাষার মৃত্যু ধীরে ধীরে হয় এবং নিম্ন থেকে উচ্চ অথবা উচ্চ থেকে নিম্ন হতে পারে।

কোন ক্ষুদ্র, ভৌগোলিকভাবে বিচ্ছিন্ন জনসংখ্যার ভাষা তাদের জনগোষ্ঠীর সাথে গণহত্যা, রোগ, বা প্রাকৃতিক দুর্যোগ দ্বারা অপসারিত হলে ভাষার মৃত্যু হতে পারে।
