History:The history of Maheshpurgovt.Degreecollege. Maheshpur, Jhenaidah. In an attempt to formulate an enlightened society by ensuring its peoples’ accessibility to the education of higher secondary level, every upazila ofBangladeshhas established, one or more colleges in its area under the auspices of its elite persons. Mohespur being a large upazila has 2 lakhs of people whose education is a pre-requisite to its development. So the people of this society here came forward to set up a college in this area with this realization in their mind. But adverse situation and socio-economic obstacles foiled their attempt several times. However, the birth, phase-wise progress and the other details of this college have turned out to be highly heart–appealing to all people of this age. It can be said that the history of Maheshpur govt. degree college dates from 1972. People tried heart and soul to establish the college in the centre of Moheshpur town but their effort ended in smoke. Finally, it was set up with renewed vigour and doubled determination beside Jolilpur Bazar near the Kabodak river. A few devotees of education from this village contributed a lot to this institute. Some founder teachers worked hard in the interest of it Sheikh Shahadullah became the principal in charge of this newly founded institute. Fortunately, this institute received adequate administration collaboration from the then upazilla chairman Late Bazlur Rahman and U.N.O Md. Anisuddin Mia. Social worker Md. Azizul Haque Khan donated a hand some amount of money to the college. As the college was staggering in the face of many obstacles, an inspection team from Jessore education board visited it for its inspection. After due deliberation, they opined that the college should be transferred to the centre of Maheshpur town. Accordingly, it was hurriedly shifted to its present site. After being located in this new place the college was running without a qualified principal. Then the college governing body appointed Md. Nowser Ali to this post. It is known to all that the college compound covered 3.93 acres of land a good part of which was contributed by Md. Azizul Haque Khan and the rest was got through purchase. So far as its infra- structural development is concerned the present administrative building was built in 1987 and classes were held in tin shed rooms. In 1988 this institute was elevated to the position of the H.S.C examination centre. In the same year Md. Nowser Ali resigned his post, then the governing body handed over the charge of the principal to Hafiz Amir Hasan Khandokar instantly to overcome the crisis. On the expiry of his tern in the last part of 1991, Md. Afsar Uddin became the full-fledged principal of this intermediate college. The question of upgrading the college to the level of degree arose in that moment. Some teachers Md. Mujibur Rahman Hawladar (the then U.N.O) rendered their sincere service for this purpose. However their attempts came out successful in 1992. After the pass of eleven years this college opened its B.S. C and B.Com courses with the kind permission of the then vice chancellor of national university. In 2004 the government of Bangladesh paid attention to the college. Consequently it was changed into a government college from its non-government position. A government order of college nationalization bearing effect from the 10thJuly, 2004 came to the principal’s possession in 2004. After two years means in 2006 a government order of teachers and employees service nationalization mentioning effect from 3rdJuly 2006 reached the college. This newly nationalized college of only six years and six months of age is keeping pace with the modern educational system of the country with one principal, one vice principal, 35 lecturers, 4 demonstrators, a physical instructor, a librarian, a cataloguer, a host of 3rdclass-4thclass employees. This suitably located institute has assumed a splendid look for its being adjacent to the kabodak river and modern infra-structure of three high rising buildings of good architecture. Rich greenery has added to the beauty of the college premises. A newly built mosque is standing beside the pathway touching the college compound. The foregoing discussion vivified that Maheshpur Government Degree college has reached its present position of maturity by passing many many barricades and untoward situation. It’s a harvest of our long untiring endeavor of people from all walks of life in this locality. The contribution, abnegation and donation of a number of large- hearted people living in Maheshpur have covered the important chapters of its history which should be preserved and well-written for the sake of the next generation.
