অ্যানিমেশনের ইতিহাস শুরু হয়েছিল চলচ্চিত্রগ্রহণশিল্প বিকাশের অনেক আগে।

১৮৪০ এবং ১৮৭০ এর মধ্যে বেশ কয়েক ধরনের বিমূর্ত ম্যাজিক লণ্ঠন প্রয়োগকৌশলের উদ্ভাবন হয়। এর মধ্যে ক্রোমাট্রপ অন্তর্ভুক্ত ছিল যা দুটি আঁকা কাঁচের ডিস্ক বিপরীত দিকে ঘুরিয়ে দিয়ে বর্ণময় জ্যামিতিক নকশা তৈরি করা হয়েছিল।[১]

মাঝে মাঝে ফ্যান্টসমাগোরিয়া শোতে ছোট ছায়ার পুতুল ব্যবহৃত হত। লিভার, পাতলা রড, চাকাযুক্ত ম্যাজিক লণ্ঠন স্লাইড ১৮৯১ সালে বাণিজ্যিকভাবে উৎপাদিত হয়েছিল এবং পেটেন্ট করা হয়েছিল।
