আদিবাসী জনগণ, যাদেরকে প্রথম মানুষ, প্রথম জাতি, আদিবাসী, আদিবাসী মানুষ বা অটোকথোনাস জনগণও বলা হয়^[১] (নির্দিষ্ট আদিবাসীদেরকে নৃগোষ্ঠী, জাতি ও এই গোষ্ঠীর সদস্য হিসাবে উল্লেখ করার সময় এই শব্দগুলো প্রায়শই ব্যবহার করা হয়।)^[১]^[২]^[৩] যারা হলো সাংস্কৃতিকভাবে স্বতন্ত্র জাতিগোষ্ঠী যাদের সদস্যরা সরাসরি একটি নির্দিষ্ট ভৌগোলিক অঞ্চলের প্রাচীনতম পরিচিত বাসিন্দাদের বংশধর এবং কিছু পরিমাণে সেই আদি জনগোষ্ঠীর ভাষা ও সংস্কৃতি বজায় রাখে।^[৪] আধুনিক প্রেক্ষাপটে আদিবাসী শব্দটি সর্বপ্রথম ইউরোপীয়রা ব্যবহার করে যারা আমেরিকার আদিবাসীদের আমেরিকার ইউরোপীয় বসতি স্থাপনকারীদের থেকে ও যাদেরকে আমেরিকায় ক্রীতদাস হিসেবে আনা হয়েছিল সেসব আফ্রিকানদের থেকে নিজেদের আলাদা করার জন্য এটি ব্যবহার করেছিল। ১৬৪৬ সালে স্যার টমাস ব্রাউন এই প্রেক্ষাপটে শব্দটি প্রথম ব্যবহার করেন যিনি বলেছিলেন "এবং যদিও এর অনেক অংশে বর্তমানে নিগ্রোদের ঝাঁক স্প্যানিয়ার্ডের অধীনে কাজ করছে, তবুও তাদের সকলকে কলম্বাসের আবিষ্কারের পর থেকে আফ্রিকা থেকে পরিবহণ করা হয়েছিল, এবং তারা আমেরিকার আদিবাসী বা যথাযথ স্থানীয় নন।"^[৫]^[৬]

জনগণকে সাধারণত "আদিবাসী" হিসাবে বর্ণনা করা হয় যখন তারা একটি প্রদত্ত অঞ্চলের প্রথম বাসিন্দাদের সাথে সম্পর্কিত ঐতিহ্য বা প্রাথমিক সংস্কৃতির অন্যান্য দিকগুলো বজায় রাখে।^[৭] সমস্ত আদিবাসীদের এই বৈশিষ্ট্যটি থাকেনা, কারণ অনেকেই একটি উপনিবেশিক সংস্কৃতির উল্লেখযোগ্য উপাদান গ্রহণ করেছে, যেমন পোষাক, ধর্ম বা ভাষা। আদিবাসীদের একটি প্রদত্ত অঞ্চলে বসতি স্থাপন করা হতে পারে (আবিষ্কৃত), একটি বৃহৎ অঞ্চল জুড়ে যাযাবর জীবনধারা প্রদর্শন করতে পারে, বা পুনর্বাসিত হতে পারে, তবে তারা সাধারণত ঐতিহাসিকভাবে একটি নির্দিষ্ট অঞ্চলের সাথে যুক্ত থাকে যার উপর তারা নির্ভরশীল। অ্যান্টার্কটিকা ব্যতীত পৃথিবীর প্রতিটি জনবসতিপূর্ণ জলবায়ু অঞ্চল ও মহাদেশে আদিবাসী সমাজ পাওয়া যায়।^[৮] সারা বিশ্বে প্রায় পাঁচ হাজার আদিবাসী জাতি রয়েছে।^[৯]

আদিবাসীদের আবাসভূমি ঐতিহাসিকভাবে বৃহত্তর জাতিগোষ্ঠীর দ্বারা উপনিবেশিত হয়েছে, যারা জাতিগত ও ধর্মীয় শ্রেষ্ঠত্ব, ভূমি ব্যবহার বা অর্থনৈতিক সুযোগের বিশ্বাসের সাথে উপনিবেশ স্থাপনকে ন্যায্যতা দিয়েছে।^[১০] সারা বিশ্বে হাজার হাজার আদিবাসী জাতি বর্তমানে এমন দেশে বসবাস করছে যেখানে তারা সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠ জাতিগোষ্ঠী নয়।^[১১] আদিবাসীরা তাদের সার্বভৌমত্ব, অর্থনৈতিক মঙ্গল, ভাষা, জানার উপায় ও তাদের সংস্কৃতির উপর নির্ভরশীল সম্পদগুলোয় প্রবেশে হুমকির সম্মুখীন হচ্ছে। জাতিসংঘ, আন্তর্জাতিক শ্রম সংস্থা ও বিশ্ব ব্যাংক আন্তর্জাতিক আইনে আদিবাসীদের অধিকার নির্ধারণ করেছে।^[১২] ২০০৭ সালে জাতিসংঘ আদিবাসীদের সম্মিলিত অধিকারের জন্য সদস্য-রাষ্ট্রের জাতীয় নীতিগুলোকে তাদের সংস্কৃতি, পরিচয়, ভাষা, আচার-অনুষ্ঠান ও কর্মসংস্থানের অধিকার রক্ষার অধিকার সহ স্বাস্থ্য, টেকসই উন্নয়ন লক্ষ্যমাত্রা, শিক্ষা ও প্রাকৃতিক সম্পদ নির্দেশিত করার জন্য আদিবাসীদের অধিকার সংক্রান্ত একটি ঘোষণাপত্র জারি করে।^[১৩]

আদিবাসীদের মোট বৈশ্বিক জনসংখ্যার অনুমান সাধারণত ২৫ কোটি থেকে ৬০ কোটি পর্যন্ত।^[১৪] কাকে আদিবাসী বলে গণ্য করা হয় তার সরকারি পদবী ও পরিভাষা দেশ ভেদে পরিবর্তিত হয়। আমেরিকা, অস্ট্রেলিয়া, নিউজিল্যান্ড ও ওশেনিয়ার মতো ইউরোপীয়দের দ্বারা উপনিবেশিত বসতি স্থাপনকারী রাষ্ট্রগুলোয় আদিবাসীর মর্যাদা সাধারণত ইউরোপীয় বসতি স্থাপনের পূর্বে সেখানে বসবাসকারী জনগণের সরাসরি বংশোদ্ভূত গোষ্ঠীগুলোর জন্য সমস্যাহীনভাবে প্রয়োগ করা হয়। সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠ আদিবাসীদের বাসস্থান এশিয়া ও আফ্রিকায় আদিবাসী জনসংখ্যার পরিসংখ্যান স্পষ্টতার দিক থেকে কম ও তাদের সংখ্যা নাটকীয়ভাবে ওঠানামা করতে পারে কারণ রাষ্ট্রগুলো আদিবাসীদের জনসংখ্যাকে প্রতিবেদনে কম তুলে ধরে বা তাদের বিভিন্ন পরিভাষা দ্বারা সংজ্ঞায়িত করে।^[১৫]

ব্যুৎপত্তি

আদিবাসী শব্দটির ইংরেজি অর্থটি লাতিন শব্দ indigena থেকে উদ্ভূত হয়েছে , যার অর্থ "ভূমি থেকে উদ্ভূত, স্থানীয়"।^[১৬] লাতিন ইন্ডিজেনা পুরাতন লাতিন ইন্দু "in, within" + gignere "to beget, produce" এর উপর ভিত্তি করে তৈরি। ইন্দু হল প্রত্ন-ইন্দো-ইউরোপীয় en বা "in" এর বর্ধিত রূপ।^[১৭] আদিবাসী শব্দটির উৎপত্তি ভারতীয় শব্দের উৎপত্তির সাথে কোনোভাবেই সম্পর্কিত নয়, যা সম্প্রতি অবধি, আমেরিকার আদিবাসীদের জন্য সাধারণত প্রযোজ্য ছিল।^[১৮]

অটোকথোনাস গ্রীক αὐτός অটোস থেকে এসেছে যার অর্থ স্ব/নিজস্ব, এবং χθών chthon অর্থ পৃথিবী। শব্দটি ইন্দো-ইউরোপীয় মূল dhghem- (পৃথিবী) ভিত্তিক। এই শব্দটির প্রথম নথিভুক্ত ব্যবহার শুরু হয় ১৮০৪ সালে।^[১৯]
