ঘূর্ণন হলো সমতলীয় কোণ পরিমাপের একটি একক যা ২π রেডিয়ান, ৩৬০ ডিগ্রী বা ৪০০ গ্রেডিয়ান এর সমান। একটি ঘূর্ণনকে চক্র, সম্পূর্ণ আবর্তন বা পূর্ণ বৃত্তও বলা হয়ে থাকে।

একটি ঘূর্ণনকে অর্ধ ঘূর্ণন, কোয়ার্টার ঘূর্ণন, সেন্টিঘূর্ণন, মিলিঘূর্ণন, পয়েন্ট ইত্যাদিতে ভাগ করা যায়।


ঘূর্ণনের উপভাগ

একটি ঘূর্ণনকে ১০০ সেন্টিঘূর্ণন বা ১০০০ মিলিঘূর্ণনে ভাগ করা যায়, যেখানে প্রতিটি মিলিঘূর্ণন সংশ্লিষ্ট কোণের মাপ ০.৩৬°, যাকে ২১′ ৩৬″ ও লেখা যায়। [১][২] একটি সেন্টিঘূর্ণনে বিভক্ত চাঁদাকে সাধারণত শতাংশ চাঁদা বলা হয়।

ঘূর্ণনের বাইনারি ভগ্নাংশও ব্যবহৃত হয়ে থাকে। জাহাজের নাবিকরা ঐতিহ্যগতভাবে একটি ঘূর্ণনকে ৩২টি কম্পাস পয়েন্টে ভাগ করেছেন। বাইনারি ডিগ্রী, ওরফে বাইনারি রেডিয়ান (বা brad), হলো একটি ঘূর্ণনের +১/২৫৬ অংশ।[৩] আধুনিক হিসাব নিকাশে এই বাইনারি ডিগ্রী ব্যবহৃত হয়, কারণ এক একক বাইটে একটি কোণকে সর্বোচ্চ সম্ভাব্য নির্ভুলতায় প্রকাশ করা যায়। আধুনিক হিসাবের ক্ষেত্রে কোণের অন্যান্য পরিমাপ হিসেবে, একটি সম্পূর্ণ ঘূর্ণনকে n এর বিভিন্ন মানের জন্য ২n সংখ্যক সমান ভাগে ভাগ করে তার উপর ভিত্তি করে ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে।[৪]

ঘূর্ণনের ধারণা সাধারণত সমতলীয় আবর্তনের ক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহার করা হয়।

গ্রীক শব্দ τόρνος (tórnos – লেদ মেশিন) থেকে ল্যাটিন এবং ফ্রেঞ্চ ভাষার মাধ্যমে ঘূর্ণন শব্দটির জন্ম।

১৬৯৭ সনে, ডেভিড গ্রেগরি বৃত্তের পরিধি ও এর ব্যাসার্ধের ভাগফল বোঝাতে +π/ρ (পাই বাই রো) ব্যবহার করেন।[৫][৬] যাহোক, ১৬৪৭ এর প্রথম দিকে, ওয়িলিয়াম উট্রেড ব্যাস ও পরিধির অনুপাত প্রকাশে +δ/π (ডেলটা বাই পাই) ব্যবহার করেন। π চিহ্নকে এর বর্তমান অর্থ(পরিধি ও ব্যাসের ভাগফল)সহ ওয়েল্‌সের গণিতবিদ উইলিয়াম জোনস সর্বপ্রথম ১৭০৬ সালে ব্যবহার করেন।[৭] লেওনার্ড অয়লার ১৭৩৭ সালে পাইকে একই অর্থসহ গ্রহণ করেন, যার ফলে এটি সর্বজনবিস্তৃতি লাভ করে।
