Editors must not change মডিউল আলাপ:Convert/data because that page is generated by running a script. The page which needs translation is ব্যবহারকারী:Johnuniq/Conversion data. An extract from that page follows.

Unit code Symbol US symbol Scale Extra Name Plural name US name US plural name Prefix Default Link
m m 1 metre meter SI v > 0 and v < 3 ! ftin ! ft Metre
mi mi 1609.344 mile km Mile
mile =mi

The "unit code" is what must be used in Template:Convert. The above defines units "m" and "mi". It also defines "mile" to be an alias (alternative name) for "mi".

My suggestion would be to not change any unit codes at the moment. Instead, change only the names and links. Doing that would not require any changes to the wikitext in articles. After I process the data (by using it to replace মডিউল আলাপ:Convert/data), the new names would take effect in all articles. When that process is reasonably complete, you could change the unit codes, and edit the articles to use the changed codes. Or, you could make each en unit code an alias for a bn code. Then, articles would not need to be changed, but could be changed as wanted.

Editing the table is a little difficult because the format must be exactly correct (the page is read by a script). Since you are not using many units, it would be simpler to just make a list of the wanted names for the units actually used. I could then readily use that information to update the conversion data page. A very simple format is all that is needed. I think plain text would be good. Perhaps the list at ব্যবহারকারী:Johnuniq/units could be changed to use <pre> tags, then the name and link could be typed after the unit code. Put a few spaces between items (any number of spaces or tabs).

Questions (done)

[সম্পাদনা]

Q1 How are plurals handled here? Suppose a unit has name "xyz". In en, the plural of a name like that would usually be "xyzs". Is any such rule applicable here? Do units use a plural name? At en.wiki, a conversion might give "1 meter" or "2 meters", or "1 foot" or "2 feet". I need to know what to do with plurals.

In Bengali/Bangla no plural is applicable for unit. So we don't need the plural name.--বেলায়েত (আলাপ | অবদান) ০৮:২৭, ২৬ জুন ২০১৩ (ইউটিসি)

Q2 I have some code to translate input numbers from bn to en (the script needs to work on en numbers), and also some code to translate output numbers from en to bn. I have not yet uploaded that code because there are several details I have to fix. Do you always want bn numbers as output? Or might you sometimes want en? I was thinking that I could have some code which detects whether bn or en was used in the input number. It could then use the same language for the output number. Or, the module could always output bn numbers. What do you think?

My opinion is whether the input is en or bn, the default output should be in bn. If anyone need en output then he should get it by using an extra flag.--বেলায়েত (আলাপ | অবদান) ০৮:২৭, ২৬ জুন ২০১৩ (ইউটিসি)

Q3 How should numbers be grouped? I will use en digits to make it easier for me. Should a result be like "12,34,56,789.12345"? That is, the first group before "." has three digits, with the others being two digits?

Yes, this is the grouping that used for bn.--বেলায়েত (আলাপ | অবদান) ০৯:২৯, ২৬ জুন ২০১৩ (ইউটিসি)

Q4 The output uses scientific notation for very big or very small values. Would simply translating the digits work? For example, is the following correct?

1.23×109 m and 1.23×10−5 m
১.২৩×১০ m and ১.২৩×১০−৫ m
Yes it is correct.--বেলায়েত (আলাপ | অবদান) ০৬:২৮, ২৮ জুন ২০১৩ (ইউটিসি)

Q5 The module permits SI prefixes for appropriate units. For example, the table at the top of this page defines "m" to use an SI prefix. The table of SI prefixes is in Module:Convert/data: see SIprefixes near the top. Given the above definition of "m" and the SIprefixes table, conversions can use units like "Mm" (megametre), "km" (kilometre), "µm" (micrometre), and many more. That affects two things. First, a conversion can use, for example, "km" as an input ("|1.5|km" is 1.5 kilometres). Second, an output from a conversion might be "1.5 kilometres" (if not abbreviated), or "1.5 km" (if abbreviated). Given the name "মিটার" and symbol "মি" for metre, using unit code "km" would show "kiloমিটার" (if not abbreviated), or "kমি" (if abbreviated). How should SI prefixes work here?

Here the 'k' or 'কি' prifix sould show "কিলো" which is "kilo". I can translate them as much as possible or as they used. Please put a list of the SIprefixes, that will help me to translate them.--বেলায়েত (আলাপ | অবদান) ১১:১৪, ২৮ জুন ২০১৩ (ইউটিসি)
I put the table at ব্যবহারকারী:Johnuniq/units#SI prefixes with the other translations. Johnuniq (আলাপ) ০০:৩৭, ২৯ জুন ২০১৩ (ইউটিসি)

Please see ব্যবহারকারী:Johnuniq/units where I have added some explanations, and requested more translations. Johnuniq (আলাপ) ০২:০৭, ৩০ জুন ২০১৩ (ইউটিসি)

I have encountered two bugs which I don't have to time to fix now. It looks like there is a minor difference between how Lua and the Scribunto library operate (the library is needed when working with bn characters). I 'll fix it in due course. Johnuniq (আলাপ) ১২:৫৩, ৩ জুলাই ২০১৩ (ইউটিসি)

I have put workarounds into the module to fix the above. More study of the results is needed, but a quick look does not show any problems. Johnuniq (আলাপ) ০৪:২৯, ৪ জুলাই ২০১৩ (ইউটিসি)

Information needed on unit names

[সম্পাদনা]

I'm putting this here so the page with the data (ব্যবহারকারী:Johnuniq/units) has very little other than the data, and I will add an alert at ব্যবহারকারী আলাপ:Bellayet#Unit names.

Module:Convert should be working here, but I have not got around to updating the unit names. There are two reasons. First, I'm busy, but second, I'm not sure about a couple of fundamental points.

I will use English, taking the unit watt as an example. For an SI unit such as watt, the module assumes that an SI prefix can be inserted before the unit name and before the unit symbol. The conversion data has a single entry for "watt", and there is no entry for "kilowatt" or "megawatt", etc. The module then knows that "kW" is a valid unit which consists of "kilo" + "watt", and "MW" is similarly "mega" + "watt". That applies to less common symbols as well, such as "pW" for "pico" + "watt".

Does the same rule apply at bn? I'm guessing the answer is yes, in which case the unit data would define unit code "W" to be "ওয়াট" (which I guess is "watt" although Google translate says it is "W"). The SI prefixes table would define mega to have name "মেগা", so the unit code "MW" would have the name "মেগা" + "ওয়াট" = "মেগাওয়াট" (and that name would be automatically generated by the module). Any other SI units would be defined in a similar manner, although I think only metre is needed at the moment.

What about a symbol for W and kW and MW? At ব্যবহারকারী:Johnuniq/units#Unit information, no symbol was entered for kW or MW. I have to define a symbol, even if it is not used. So should I just use the name for the symbol? Johnuniq (আলাপ) ০৩:৩৫, ২৩ জুলাই ২০১৩ (ইউটিসি)

You are right, "W" would be "ওয়াট", kW would be "কিলোওয়াট", MW would be "মেগাওয়াট". Actually there is no defined symbol in Bangla for Units, they recognized with their names. Only few of them recognized with the short forms of their names such as km=কিমি, m=মি but there is no symbol.--বেলায়েত (আলাপ | অবদান) ১০:৫২, ২৪ জুলাই ২০১৩ (ইউটিসি)

The following was in #Translation results below. I've moved it to here because it is probably not needed now, and it makes the other section unnecessarily long. Johnuniq (আলাপ) ০৪:৪১, ১৮ আগস্ট ২০১৩ (ইউটিসি)

Symbols/names before change

[সম্পাদনা]

Following are the items from the above tables that need fixing. The outputs have been copied from Special:ExpandTemplates so they will not change after the units are updated. This is in case we want to refer to how the units were, before the changes that I will make soon. Johnuniq (আলাপ) ০৭:৫৬, ৬ আগস্ট ২০১৩ (ইউটিসি)

I have used the unit names and SI prefixes at User:Johnuniq/units to update many unit symbols and names. The above Translation results section illustrates the new definitions.

Please examine the above section carefully and check if the symbols and names are correct.

Several units are still in English, and they can be fixed later.

Also, please look over User:Johnuniq/convert tests and see if you notice any problems.

One issue from User:Johnuniq/units#Unit information is that I think "mph" is given as "meters per hour" whereas it should be "miles per hour". I used the translation for "mi/h", and am mentioning this only in case there is a misunderstanding about what "mph" means at en.wikipedia.

There are probably lots of other unit translations needed, possibly starting with "g" (gram). I used the definition for "kg" (kilogram) but could not work out what "g" should be.

In a couple of days I will have a look at the error categories mentioned at User talk:Johnuniq#Module:Convert (there is a delay before they are updated). They will show problems that need to be fixed.

There are many other things to translate, such as the category names and the error messages, but they should be left in English at the moment so I can see what needs to be fixed. In the future, you may want to replace the unit codes as well, so for example, you do not have to use "kg" to convert kilograms. Again, that had better wait until other problems are fixed.

If you can see any problems, or can add any symbols and names for translation (like gram), please make a note here. Johnuniq (আলাপ) ০৪:৪৫, ২ আগস্ট ২০১৩ (ইউটিসি)

Convert errors

[সম্পাদনা]

I had a quick look at some of the error categories mentioned above. Some examples follow.

I think that the above templates could be edited to change each unit with the replacement code shown in the following.

Unit Replacement Name
বর্গকিলোমিটার sqkm square kilometer
বর্গমাইল sqmi square mile
/বর্গকিমি /sqkm per square kilometer

Is that correct? Would someone like to make the edits, or I will. Johnuniq (আলাপ) ১০:৪৫, ২ আগস্ট ২০১৩ (ইউটিসি)

Yes, you are correct. No need to edit.--বেলায়েত (আলাপ | অবদান) ১২:৩৩, ২ আগস্ট ২০১৩ (ইউটিসি)
