This template takes an optional id parameter, heading, author(s) listing and page number or numbers for the MSW3 entry on the species or other taxon in question. For example:

{{MSW3 | id = 14300023 | page = 725}}

gives

Wilson, D. E.; Reeder, D. M., সম্পাদকগণ (২০০৫)। Mammal Species of the World: A Taxonomic and Geographic Reference (3rd সংস্করণ)। Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press। পৃ. ৭২৫। আইএসবিএন ৯৭৮-০-৮০১৮-৮২২১-০। ওসিএলসি 62265494।

for the fin whale, Balaenoptera physalus (the title link goes to the MSW3 web page for the species entry). In the following example, a heading and author listing are used:

{{MSW3 | id = 13801049 | pages = 391–393 | heading = Genus ''Nycteris'' | author = Simmons, N. B.}}

giving

Simmons, N. B. (২০০৫)। "Genus Nycteris"। Wilson, D. E.; Reeder, D. M. (সম্পাদকগণ)। Mammal Species of the World: A Taxonomic and Geographic Reference (3rd সংস্করণ)। Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press। পৃ. ৩৯১–৩৯৩। আইএসবিএন ৯৭৮-০-৮০১৮-৮২২১-০। ওসিএলসি 62265494।

for Nycteris (the heading link now goes to the MSW3 web page for the genus entry, while the title link goes to the Google Books preview for MSW3).

More specific versions of this template are available to aid editors by referring to specific sections of the book, named after either the authors or subject taxa of the section in question. All of these versions supply an author listing, and all the taxon-based and some of the author-based versions also supply a default chapter heading. These versions include:
