প্রকৃত মাছি ডিপ্টেরা (ডি = দ্বি, টেরন = পক্ষ) বর্গভুক্ত একটি পতঙ্গ, যার কিনা মেসোথোরাক্সে এক জোড়া পাখা আছে আর মেটাথোরাক্সে পেছনের পাখা হতে উদ্ভূত এক জোড়া হ্যালটেয়ার (:en:halteres) আছে।
মাছির এক জোড়া পাখাই একে মাছি জাতীয় অন্যান্য পতঙ্গ (যেমন: ফড়িং, ঘাসফড়িং, প্রজাপতি ইত্যাদি) থেকে আলাদা করেছে।
ডিপ্টেরা একটি বৃহৎ বর্গ, প্রায় ২৪০,০০০ প্রজাতিবিশিষ্ট, যার মধ্যে কেবল অর্ধেকের বর্ণনা প্রদান করা হয়েছে[১]। এটি পরিবেশগত দিক থেকে এবং মানুষের জন্যে (চিকিৎসা ও অর্থনৈতিক) খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ একটি পতঙ্গ বর্গ। বিশেষত কিউলিসিডা মশা বিভিন্ন রকম রোগের বাহক হিসাবে কাজ করে।
