ক্যারন বা শ্যারন সৌরজগতের বামন গ্রহ প্লুটোর সর্ববৃহৎ ও প্রথম আবিষ্কৃত উপগ্রহ। এটি ১৯৭৮ খ্রিস্টাব্দের ২২ জুন ইউনাইটেড নেশনস ন্যাভাল অবযারভেটরি ফ্ল্যাগস্টাফ স্টেশন কর্তৃক আবিষ্কৃত হয়। ২০০৫ খ্রিস্টাব্দে প্লুটোর আরো দুটি উপগ্রহ (নিক্স এবং হাইড্রা) আবিষ্কৃত হওয়ার পর ক্যারনকে আরো ডাকা হতে থাকে (134340) Pluto I নামে।[১] নাসা'র নিউ হরাইজন মিশন ২০১৫ খ্রিস্টাব্দের জুলাই মাসে প্লুটো এবং ক্যারন ভ্রমণ করবে বলে শিডিউল করা হয়েছে।
ক্যারনকে কখনও কাইরন (Chiron)-এর সাথে গুলিয়ে ফেললে চলবে না, কারণ ক্যারন হলো সৌরজগতের একটি উপগ্রহ, অন্যদিকে কাইরন হলো সৌরজগতের বাইরের অন্য সৌরজগতের একটি বামন গ্রহ।

উচ্চারণ [সম্পাদনা]
বাংলায় একে অনেকে "চ্যারন" বলে থাকেন, তবে এর সঠিক উচ্চারণ[৮] হলো "ক্যারন" বা "শ্যারন"। সাধারণত মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্র ও অন্যান্য ইংরেজিভাষী বিশ্বে "শ্যারন" নামটি বেশি প্রচলিত।

১৯৯০'র দিকে, হাবল টেলিস্কোপের নেয়া ছবিগুলোই প্রথম প্রমাণ করতে সক্ষম হয় যে, প্লুটো এবং ক্যারন আলাদা আলাদা গোলাকৃতি। পরবর্তিতে ভূমি থেকে পরিচালিত টেলিস্কোপের ক্ষেত্রেও এ্যাডাপ্টিভ অপটিক্স-এর উন্নয়ন প্লুটো এবং ক্যারনের আলাদা গোলাকৃতির ব্যাপারটি সমাধান করা সম্ভব হয়।
