গুবরে পোকা সর্বাধিক সংখ্যক প্রজাতিবিশিষ্ট পতঙ্গ। এরা কোলিওপ্টেরা বর্গভুক্ত; গ্রিক ভাষায় কোলিওস অর্থ আবরণ এবং টেরন অর্থ পাখা, অর্থাৎ আবরণযুক্ত পাখা, যে বর্গে প্রাণীজগতের অন্যান্য যেকোন বর্গের হতে অধিক সংখ্যক প্রজাতি বিদ্যমান, যা কিনা সকল প্রকার জ্ঞাত জীবের ২৫%[১]। বর্ণিত হওয়া পতঙ্গের মধ্যে ৪০% হল গুবরে পোকা (প্রায় ৩,৫০,০০০ প্রজাতি), এবং প্রায়ই এর নতুন প্রজাতি আবিষ্কার হচ্ছে। ধারণা করা হয় বর্ণিত ও অবর্ণিত মিলিয়ে গুবরে পোকার সর্বমোট প্রজাতি সংখ্যা ৫০ থেকে ৮০ লক্ষ। সবচেয়ে বড় পরিবারও এই বর্গভুক্ত, সারকুলিওনিডে।
গুবরে পোকা প্রায় সর্বত্রই পাওয়া যায়, তবে সমুদ্র ও মেরু অঞ্চল ব্যতীত। তারা তাদের বাস্তুসংস্থানের সাথে নানাভাবে আদান-প্রদান করে। উদ্ভিদ ও ছত্রাক এদের সাধারণ খাদ্য, এরা পঁচে যাওয়া প্রাণী ও উদ্ভিদ এবং অন্যান্য অমেরুদন্ডী প্রাণি খেয়ে থাকে।কিছু কিছু প্রজাতি পাখি ও স্তন্যপায়ী সহ বিভিন্ন প্রাণী শিকার করে, আবার কেউ কেউ ফসলের ক্ষতিকারক বালাই। .
