এই আসনটি সিকিমের বৌদ্ধ সন্ন্যাসী (সংঘ) সম্প্রদায়ের জন্য সংরক্ষিত।[২] রাজ্যের ১১১টি স্বীকৃত বৌদ্ধ মঠের ভিক্ষু ও ভিক্ষুণিরাই[৩] এই আসনে প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা ও ভোটদান করতে পারেন।[২]
১৯৭৫ সালের সিকিমের রাজতন্ত্র গণভোটের পর সিকিম ভারতের একটি রাজ্যে পরিণত হয় এবং তৎকালীন রাজ্য পরিষদের সদস্যেরা নবগঠিত সিকিম রাজ্যের বিধানসভার সদস্যপদ লাভ করেন।
১৯৯৩ সালে রাইজিং সান পার্টিররাম চন্দ্র পৌডিয়াল সিক্কিমে সংঘ বিধানসভা আসন এবং ভুটিয়া-লেপচা সংরক্ষিত আসনগুলির বৈধতাকে চ্যালেঞ্জ জানিয়ে ভারতের সুপ্রিম কোর্টে মামলা দায়ের করেন।[২৩] সুপ্রিম কোর্ট মামলাটি খারিজ করে দিয়ে জানায় যে, সংঘ পূর্বতন পরিষদের সিদ্ধান্ত-গ্রহণের বিষয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা গ্রহণ করেছিল এবং সংরক্ষণের বিষয়টি নিছকই ধর্মের ভিত্তিতে করা হয়নি এবং সেই কারণেই তা অ-সাংবিধানিক নয়।[২৪][২৫]
