যদিও কোন দেশের জাতীয় পতাকা সেই দেশের একটি বিশিষ্ট প্রতীক, তাও বিশ্বে এমন অনেক জোড়া দেশ আছে যাদের পতাকার অনেকটাই একই রকম দেখতে; আর তাই সহজেই গুলিয়ে যায়। যেমন মোনাকোর আর ইন্দোনেশিয়ার পতাকা, শুধুমাত্র পতাকার আকারের অণুপাতের দিক থেকে আলাদা। আবার হল্যান্ডের এবং লুক্সেমবুর্গের পতাকা আকারের অণুপাতে আলাদা তো বটেই, তাছাড়াও পতাকার নীল রঙের গাড়ত্বেও পার্থক্য আছে। আর রোমানিয়া ও চাদের পতাকায় পার্থক্য শুধুমাত্র পতাকার নীল রঙের গাড়ত্বে।

আবার পতাকার রঙের ব্যবহারে আঞ্চলিক পছন্দ লক্ষ্যনীয়। যেমন, স্লাভ অঞ্চলের দেশগুলির পতাকায় লাল, সাদা ও নীল রং বেশি ব্যবহার হয়েছে। চেক প্রজাতন্ত্র, রাশিয়া, স্লোভেনিয়া, এবং ক্রোয়েশিয়া এই ধারার উদাহরণ। এছাড়াও পশ্চিমী বিশ্বেও এই তিনটি রঙের আধিক্য দেখা যায়; যেমন, অস্ট্রেলিয়া, ফ্রান্স, নিউজিল্যান্ড, যুক্তরাজ্য, হল্যান্ড ও যুক্তরাষ্ট্র। আফ্রিকার দেশগুলি আবার লাল, হলুদ আর সবুজ রং বেশি পছন্দ করে। যেমন, ক্যামেরুন, মালি ও সেনেগাল। আবার আরব দেশগুলির পছন্দ কালো, সাদা ও লাল রং। যেমন, মিশর, ইরাক ও ইয়েমেন।

এই আশ্চর্য্য মিলের কিছু কিছু কাকতালীয় হলেও, কিছু কিছু আবার দেশগুলির একই ইতিহাসের সাক্ষ্য বহন করছে। উদাহরণ হিসাবে বলা যায়, ভেনেজুয়েলা, কলম্বিয়া, আর ইকুয়েডরের পতাকা আসলে গ্রেট কলম্বিয়ার পতাকারই বিভিন্ন রূপ। স্পেন থেকে প্রথমে গ্রেট কলম্বিয়া নামে ঐ ভূখন্ড স্বাধীনতা লাভ করে; পরে ভেনেজুয়েলার বিখ্যাত স্বাধীনতা যোদ্ধা ফ্রানসিস্কো ডি মিরান্ডার সাহায্যে দেশ তিনটি পৃথক হয়। আবার আরব বিদ্রোহের পতাকার (১৯১৬-১৯১৮) সাথে মিশর, ইরাক, সিরিয়া, ওইয়েমেনের পতাকার মিল লক্ষ্যনীয়। নর্ডিক দেশগুলির (মানে আইসল্যান্ড, ডেনমার্ক, নরওয়ে, সুইডেন, ফিনল্যান্ড, এছাড়া ফারো দ্বীপপুঞ্জ ও আলান্ডের মত স্বশাসিত এলাকা গুলি) পতাকা আবার একই নক্সার। এই নক্সা হল এক রঙের জমির উপর আর এক রঙের "+"-চিহ্ন। যুক্তরাষ্ট্র ও যুক্তরাজ্য উভয়ের পতাকাতেই লাল নীল ও সাদা রং ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে। কারণ যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের প্রথম তেরটি রাজ্য যুক্তরাজ্যের প্রাক্তন উপনিবেশ ছিল। আবার অস্ট্রেলিয়া ও নিউজিল্যান্ডের পতাকাতেও ব্রিটিশ ঐতিহ্যের কারণে সাযুজ্য লক্ষ্যনীয়। দুদেশের পতাকাতেই ইউনিয়ন জ্যাক আছে এক কোনায়, জমিতে গাঢ় নীল রং, এবং দুদেশের পতাকাতেই সাদার্ন ক্রস ভীষণ ভাবে উপস্থিত।

আরো নানান রকম সাযুজ্যও বিভিন্ন দেশের জাতীয় পতাকায় দেখা যায়। যেমন উল্টো রঙের ব্যবহার যদি ধরা হয় তাহলে আইভরি কোস্ট আর আয়ার্ল্যান্ডের পতাকা এক। আবার প্রাচীন ঐতিহাসিক পতাকা ও আজকের পতাকা ধরলে, আজকের আলবানিয়ার জাতীয় পতাকা আসলে বাইজ্যান্টাইন (পূর্ব রোমান) সাম্রাজ্যের যুদ্ধ পতাকা।
