জলহস্তী (ইংরেজি Hippopotamus হিপোপটেমাস) আফ্রিকার একটি তৃণভোজী স্তন্যপায়ী প্রাণী। পানিতে নেমে জলজ উদ্ভিদ খায়।
জলহস্তীরাও অনিয়ন্ত্রিত শিকার এবং চোরাশিকারের কবলে পড়ে। মে ২০০৬ সালে, জলহস্তীকে আইইউসিএন লাল তালিকায় একটি সংকটাপন্ন প্রজাতি হিসেবে প্রকৃতি সংরক্ষণের জন্য আন্তর্জাতিক ইউনিয়ন (আইইউসিএন) চিহ্নিত করে ছিল। তখন জলহস্তীর মোট সংখ্যা ছিল ১,২৫,০০০ থেকে ১,৫০,০০০ এর মধ্যে, আইইউসিএন ১৯৯৬ সালের পর থেকে এই বিষয়ে অধ্যয়ন করে চিহ্নিত করেছিল যে এদের আনুমানিক সংখ্যা ৭% থেকে ২০% পর্যন্ত কমেছে। তখন জাম্বিয়ায় (৪০,০০০) এবং তাঞ্জানিয়ায় (২০,০০০-৩০,০০০) সদস্যের বৃহত্তম জনগোষ্ঠী এই দুই দেশে ছিলো।[১]

এই প্রাণীর নামে ভারতীয় নৌবাহিনীর পূর্ব নৌসেনা কম্যান্ড-এর যুদ্ধ জাহাজ INS জলশ্ব-র নামকরণ করা হয়।
