ভাইয়া একটা request, আপনার tutorial টা বেশ কাজের। ওটাকে আরেকটু highlight করার ব্যবস্থা করেন। আর ঐখানে কতগুলো ইনফো দেয়া যায়? কিভাবে অন্য ভাষার উইকিগুলোকে সংযুক্ত করব (এটা পারি), দু'টো আর্টিকেল merge করার proposal (খুবই দরকার), Template গুলো ব্যবহার করা, শ্রেণীগুলো সংযোগ করা, Category-র লিস্ট, মোট কথা যা যা মেটা-ইনফো একজন দিতে পারে খুব চিন্তা করা ছাড়াই। আমার মনে হয় এই গুলো যদি টিউটোরিয়ালে থাকে তাহলে লোকে শখের বশে যেই এন্ট্রি গুলো করে সেগুলো আরো কাজে আসত। যেমন ধরেন কেউ যদি ইংলিশ লিংকটা দেয়, বট অন্যগুলো করে দিতে পারে। --ইমাম তাশদীদ উল আলম ২২:২০, ১৭ অক্টোবর ২০০৬ (UTC)

উইকি টেবিল

অর্ণব ভাই, মেটা উইকিতে সে পদ্ধতিতে টেবিল তৈরি করার কথা বলা হয়েছে ঠিক সে ভাবে বাংলা উইকিতে টেবিল তৈরি করলে সেটা ঠিক ভাবে দেখায় না। এ সমস্যার সমাধান কি? ইন উইকিতে টেবিলের যে সকল template করা আছে তাতে সহজেই ইন উইকিতে সুন্দর টেবিল তৈরি করা যায়। যেটা বাংলা তে করা যায় না। যদি অভিজ্ঞ কাউকে দিয়ে বাংলার জন্য template গুলো তৈরি করা যেত। তাহলে ব্যবহারকারীদের কষ্ট কমে যেত।--বেলায়েত ০৬:১৩, ১০ জুন ২০০৬ (UTC)

My fault, I was removing the hard codings from the file and hit few oopses. But hey, I can't read the language, but you know what goes where. It's ok, I can take care of moving the pages back to their place. But I have a question: how did you get to change the code in the first place? I am asking this because I want to change some bangla spellings for some Bangla namespaces and also translate some of the English ones into bangla. Do you know how I can do that? I'm a Mediawiki developer. I will sure help you to correct and translate. Are you familiar with the process? Anyway, I put the current version of the file containing the translations at here. It doesn't contain untranslated entries, I can add some of them to it if you want to. Also, other Bangla projects are currently using english names for Project namespace and Sitename. Ok. The same messages can be found at Special:Allmessages. The difference is that it only changes translations for this wiki. For the same reason the language file must be generic, because it is the starting point for other wikies too. But I intend to change the spelling of that as well. It's currently spelled wiki-peh-dia, but it should be spelt wiki-pee-dia, as shown in the logo. Zaheen, after publication of Munir bhai's article in Prothom Alo, there is an avalanche of new users. Could you write a small tutorial, may be 1 pages, on 1) how to enable bangla unicode support 2) where to start as a new user 3) a few words/sentences of core wikipedia policies? I have already done so. Notice the two announcements at the top of every page. The first one on "how to set up your browser for Bangla script" is about enabling unicode support. The second one is to direct the new users to the core policies of wikipedia. I am not sure how much more visibility we need to generate. Yeah, you are right ... but we have to think about the lowest common denominator here :). Anyway, the bolded text on top of each page should suffice now. And it seems that most of the mediawiki stuff are translated, by now. I'm creating the categories one by one ... however, I'm confused about the root category. category problem

Zaheen, I'm confused about the "Bangladeshi *" categories. I had created a lot of them, categorizing people in different professions. But I named the categories বাংলাদেশের * । now I think I should have named them বাংলাদেশী *। What do you think?It is important that we decide now, before the number of articles go high. Zaheen, can you take a look at Template:বাংলাদেশের প্রশাসনিক অঞ্চল? I'm confused about the spelling of নোয়াখালি , নরসিংদি, নিলফামারী, মাদারিপুর. I'm not sure whether to use ই or ঈ in the spellings. So, I will keep from creating the stub pages, until I can be sure of the spelling. Great to see we're up to 1000 articles. Now, I've some question about the nomenclature of the upazilas. Right now, উপজেলা is not used officially, rather থানা is used. So, the term upazila is not entirely correct. I know উপজেলা is a better term for the administrative unit, but then again, it is not an official term now. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Ragib . You don't have to add numbers to section headings explicitly, the sections are supposed to get a sequential numbering automatically. I had a question related to your recent edit of মানুষ. Context এর বাংলা পরিপ্রক্ষিত। কিন্ত contextual এর বাংলা মনে আসছিলনা । প্রতিবেশিক sounds logical.. but I have never heard of it in this context..To me it gave a feeling of neighbouring, which could in someway mean "different similar meanings in the neighorhood.. ie, meanings close to each other). What about প্রসঙ্গ? প্রাসঙ্গিক sometimes means "relevant". But প্রসঙ্গ can mean both pretext(relevance) and context. I leave it upto you to coment which one will be better, প্রাসঙ্গিক or প্রতিবেশিক? (পরিপ্রাসঙ্গিক could also fit the shoe.. Buts its too big and cumbersome..)

Interesting issue. The Bangla Academy English-Bengali dictionary has these translations:
  • context - রচনার কোনো অংশের বর্ণনা প্রসঙ্গ
  • out of context - প্রসঙ্গবহির্ভূত
  • contextual - প্রাসঙ্গিক
I have also seen Dr. Humayun Azad use "প্রতিবেশ" and "পরিস্থিতি" to mean the "surrounding context" of a word in a sentence and "প্রাতিবেশিক" and "পরিস্থিতিনির্ভর" to mean "contextual."

Hi Zaheen|অর্ণব, I am accessing from Stanford either through my laptop (which has DHCP and 128.12.147.175 is one of the IP addresses it gets) or from a lab desktop. Of course I am registered. But sometimes even without logging in my bn.wiki.. page shows me as logged in..(because may be I didnt nog out the previous time.. In that case I didnt log in again.. Probably windows are not refreshing even if I close and reopen the browser. Well, all geographic locations, that can be verified, are of course encyclopedic. I looked into Rambot's edits, it did kickstart most of the articles of US cities. Back to the Telugu wiki, they crossed 10k today. BUT, I checked their 100 most recent newly created articles, all of them are templates. (and just 20-30 word ones). Of course, we can't really complain, because almost 3000 of our recent articles are also templatized placeholders (not even stubs!!).

Anyway, I think it might be a good idea to cut down on creating such templatized empty pages, because some of them may never get filled in. Case in point are the upazila articles. Even though we have the data, only a handful (<10?) of them has anything beyond the placeholders.

I don't quite follow your conclusion. "2 sentences" is a pretty arbitrary barrier of inclusion, don't you think? Is "2 sentences" somehow more encyclopedic than a template placeholder? Why does it even matter? Will we lose some kind of "credibility"/"prestige" inside the wiki community if our "article" count goes high without much content inside in most of them? Even if that is true, why should we bother too much about it? We can always set up fun whimsical goals like "x" article counts in "y" months, "x" featured and "y" good articles in "n" years, no new articles containing less than "x" sentences, etc. The fact is this type of activity has very little to do with the creation actual, carefully edited encyclopedic articles of use. Far from it. I know I might be saying stuff here that contradicts my past editing behavior/comments on the evolution of this wiki. But bear with me. I think these are serious issues. Hi Zaheen :-) I've noticed that you've recently edited an article about a town in Slovakia, Mošovce (মোশোডতসে). I'd like to ask you for help. A friend of mine has translated the text for the article into Bengali, but wasn't able to type it on a PC :-(.

I've uploaded a scanned version of his translation to the talk page. If you had a bit time, I'd be mighty thankful if you could help me out by transcribing the text into PC. I'd wikify the resulting article, but transcribing the text is an overwhelming job for me, as I don't speak Bengali and I'm not familiar with the Bengali script (and none of the other indic scripts either)...

2. What are the bengali of Sex worker? not গণিকা/ বারবণিতা/ বেশ্যা, because there can be male sex workers (eg gigolos).. What would be the bengali for a Gigolo? (I knew a bengali gynecologist who was doing some research on a gigolo slum in Bombay). I remember reading in বিশ্বকোষ loong back that Nymphomania means বৃষস্যন্তীতা (not sure of the spelling). On 1, I will reply there. On 2, পতিতা is another synonym I have seen used. I haven't found a Bangla term for gigolo (পুরুষ যৌনকর্মী/সঙ্গী?). In Bengali general dictionaries Nymphomania is translated as "নারীর অস্বাভাবিক যৌনাকাঙ্ক্ষা". In specialized psychological dictionaries, I can see that it's translated as বৃষস্যন্তীতা, অত্যানন্দা, স্ত্রীকামোন্মাদ, মদনোন্মাদনা, স্ত্রীলোকের কামোন্মত্ততা, শৃঙ্গারোন্মত্ততা, অতিকামুকতা, পরী-বাতিকতা, পরীধরা রোগ। Sayriasis = পুংকামোন্মাদ। --অর্ণব (আলাপ | অবদান) ০৭:৩০, ৬ ফেব্রুয়ারি ২০০৭ (UTC)


Transliteration for Bangla

I have recently created a transliteration scheme for Bangla here with my limited knowledge of Bangla. This can be linked to monobook.js to enable direct Bangla text entry like the text entry of Devnagari in Nepal Bhasa. I think this method can be a lot more easier than asking each user to install the indic scripts and to learn the input pattern. Also, Usingha of Manipuri is also working on it. ব্যাপারটা জানানোর জন্য ধন্যবাদ। আমার মাথাতেও যে কথাটা আসেনি তা নয়। কিন্তু সম্ভবত আিম পাঠকের কথা চিন্তা করে এরূপ করেছি। একজন পাঠক ঐ যোগসূত্রে ক্লিক করে যেন হতাশ না হয় এ জন্য। বাংলা না হোক অন্ততঃ ইংরেজিটাতো দেখতে পারবে। তার মানে এই না যে, আিম ওগুলোর বাংলা দেখতে চাই না, বরং যিনি সমৃদ্ধকরতে চান উনি ঐ যোগসূত্রে ক্লিক করে ইংরেজি দেখে নিজ থেকেই বুঝতে পারবেন যে এটার বাংলা প্রয়োজন, কাজেই উনি স্বয়ংসম্পুর্ন করার জন্য বাংলা পৃষ্ঠা তৈরী করতে পারবেন....সাথে সাথে এই যোগসূত্রটাও ঠিক করে দেবেন --এটুকু ভরসাতেই ওভাবে করা। যেমন ধরুন এই গ্লোবাল ওয়ার্মিং প্রবন্ধটা দেখে আমিও কিন্তু এভাবেই এটার অনুবাদ শুরু করব মনস্থ করেছিলাম।

অপরপক্ষে অনেক এরকম যোগসূত্র আছে যা সমৃদ্ধ করা প্রয়োজন .... এমনকি অনেক পৃষ্ঠা আছে যেখানে দুই/এক লাইনও লেখা নেই। এ ধরনের পৃষ্ঠা দেখে খারাপ লাগে.... শুধু পৃষ্ঠা সংখ্যাই বেড়েছে কিংবা বলা যায় বাংলা উইকিতে এখন ..xx..হাজার নিবন্ধ; কিন্তু আসলে তো তা সত্য নয়.... .... (এই ফাকা পৃষ্ঠাগুলো দেখে আমার এরকমই মনে হয়েছিল -- নিজের সাথেই প্রতারণার মত)

শেষ যে ব্যাপারটা.... সেটা হলো: ঘর পোড়া গরু, সিঁদুরে মেঘ দেখে ডরায়। আমি বানান ভুল করতে ওস্তাদ। তাই একটা ভুল বানানের যোগসূত্র দিতে চাইনি। এছাড়া আরো একটা ব্যাপার হলো যে, বেশ কিছু অনুবাদকৃত পরিভাষা সম্পর্কে আমি নিজেই সন্তুষ্ট নই। তাই ওগুলোর কোন পরামর্শ আসলে পরে ঐ সর্বগ্রাহ্য নাম দিয়ে (সঠিক বানানে) তবেই একটা নতুন পৃষ্ঠা খোলা ভাল হবে বলে আমি মনে করি।

ঠিকাছে। আমি না হয় যোগসূত্রগুলো লাল করে দিলাম। কিন্তু অন্ততপক্ষে এটা ইংরেজি উইকির কোন প্রবন্ধকে নির্দেশ করছে, সেটার তো একটা সূত্র থাকতে হবে; তা না জানলে তো পরবর্তীতে যে-ই সমৃদ্ধ করুক তার অসুবিধা হবে। যেমন ধরুন তাপমাত্রার দলিল কথাটি মূল কোন প্রবন্ধের নির্দেশক তা তো শুধু তাপমাত্রার দলিল (লাল কালিতে) লিখে দিলে যে কারো বুঝতে খুবই অসুবিধা হবে। সেক্ষেত্রে অনুবাদ করার সময় দেখা যাবেে, পৃষ্ঠাটি খুলে তারপর ওতে সেই মূল ইংরেজি প্রবন্ধের যোগসূত্র দিযে আসতে হবে। কিন্তু, আমি তো নতুন পৃষ্ঠা খুলতেই একটু দ্বিধান্বিত থাকি। এই ভূমণ্ডলীয় উষ্ণতা বৃদ্ধি পৃষ্ঠাটিই ৩ বারে নাম শুদ্ধ হয়েছে (ভুমন্ডলীয় উষ্ণতা বৃদ্ধি --> ভূমন্ডলীয় উষ্ণতা বৃদ্ধি --> .....)। এখন একটা বুদ্ধি দেন যেটাতে লাল কালিতে নতুন পৃষ্ঠা খোলার উপযুক্ত যোগসূত্র দেয়া যাবে আবার সাথে সাথে মূল কোন ইংরেজি প্রবন্ধকে ওটা নির্দেশ করছে সেই তথ্য্ও বাদ যাবে না। এভাবে কি দেয়া যায়: তাপমাত্রার দলিল [৩]--শামীম (আলাপ | অবদান) ১৭:৩৩, ২৬ ফেব্রুয়ারি ২০০৭ (UTC)
