যুক্তরাজ্যের হাউস অফ কমন্সের সবকটি ৬৩৫টি আসনে নির্বাচন করার জন্য ১৯৭৯ সালের ৩ মে নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। রক্ষণশীল দল নির্বাচনে জয়ী হয় এবং মার্গারেট থ্যাচার প্রধানমন্ত্রী হন। তিনি ছিলেন যুক্তরাজ্যের প্রথম মহিলা প্রধানমন্ত্রী।
২৮ মার্চ হাউস অফ কমন্সে জেমস ক্যালাগানের প্রতি অনাস্থা ভোটের কারণে নির্বাচনটি হয়েছিল। থ্যাচার সামনে এনেছিলেন বলেই এই ভোট হয়েছে। এটা নির্বাচন করতে বাধ্য করেছে।
