মহামতি অ্যালফ্রেড (ইংরেজি: Alfred the Great; ৮৪৮/৪৯ – ২৬ অক্টোবর ৮৯৯) ছিলেন ওয়েস্ট স্যাক্সন রাজা (৮৭১ – আনুমানিক ৮৮৬) এবং তারপরে অ্যাংলো-স্যাক্সন রাজা (আনুমানিক ৮৮৬ – ৮৯৯)। তিনি ছিলেন রাজা এথেলউলফের কনিষ্ঠ পুত্র। এথেলউলফের মৃত্যুর সময় অ্যালফ্রেড ছিলেন নাবালক। অ্যালফ্রেডের তিন অগ্রজ এথেলবাল্ড, এথেলবার্ট ও এথেলরেড অ্যালফ্রেডের পূর্বে পর্যায়ক্রমে রাজত্ব করেছিলেন।

সিংহাসনে আরোহণের পর অ্যালফ্রেডকে বেশ কয়েক বছর অতিবাহিত করতে হয় ভাইকিং আক্রমণ প্রতিরোধ করতে। ৮৭৮ সালে তিনি এডিংটনের যুদ্ধে এক চূড়ান্ত বিজয় লাভ করেন এবং ভাইকিংদের সঙ্গে একটি চুক্তি করেন। এই চুক্তির ফলেও ইংল্যান্ডের উত্তরে ডেন্ল সৃষ্টি হল। ভাইকিং নেতা গাথরামের খ্রিস্টধর্মে ধর্মান্তরণেরও তত্ত্বাবধান করেন অ্যালফ্রেড। ভাইকিংদের আক্রমণের প্রচেষ্টার বিরুদ্ধে তিনি নিজের রাজ্যকে রক্ষা করে ইংল্যান্ডের একজন প্রভাবশালী শাসক হয়ে ওঠেন। নবম শতাব্দীর ওয়েলশ পণ্ডিত ও বিশপ অ্যাসেরের রচনায় অ্যালফ্রেডের জীবনকথা বিস্তারিতভাবে বর্ণিত হয়েছে।

বিদ্বান ও দয়ালু ব্যক্তি হিসেবে অ্যালফ্রেডের খ্যাতি ছিল। তিনি শিক্ষাদানে উৎসাহ দিতেন। অ্যালফ্রেড লাতিনের পরিবর্তে প্রাচীন ইংরেজি ভাষায় প্রাথমিক শিক্ষাদানের পক্ষপাতী ছিলেন। এছাড়া তিনি আইন ব্যবস্থা, সামরিক পরিকাঠামো ও তাঁর প্রজাদের জীবনযাত্রার মানের উন্নতিসাধন করেছিলেন। ষোড়শ শতাব্দীতে তাঁকে "মহামতি" আখ্যা দেওয়া হয়।
