২০১৩ সালের ২০ ডিসেম্বর জাতিসংঘের সাধারণ পরিষদের ৬৮তম অধিবেশনে, যেখানে ৫ ডিসেম্বরকে বিশ্ব মৃত্তিকা দিবস হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি দেওয়া হয়।[১][২] এর মূল উদ্দেশ্য ছিল বিশ্বব্যাপী মাটির গুরুত্ব সম্পর্কে সচেতনতা বৃদ্ধি করা, বিশেষ করে খাদ্য নিরাপত্তা,[৩] কৃষি,[৪] জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন মোকাবিলা, দারিদ্র্য দূরীকরণ এবং টেকসই উন্নয়নে মাটির ভূমিকা সম্পর্কে।[৫]
জাতিসংঘের খাদ্য ও কৃষি সংস্থা বিশ্ব মৃত্তিকা দিবস উপলক্ষে #WorldSoilDay হ্যাশট্যাগ এবং "মাটি ক্ষয় রোধ করুন, ভবিষ্যৎ বাঁচান" শীর্ষক একটি প্রচারাভিযান চালু করেছে।[৬] তারা ছাত্র-ছাত্রী, কৃষক, শিক্ষক, এনজিও এবং বেসরকারি সংস্থার জন্য বিভিন্ন কার্যক্রমের প্রস্তাব দিয়েছে।[৭]
