দেখতে লাগে "হমং" শব্দের উচ্চারণটা "হ-মঙ্" হবে - এটা ত ঠিক নয়। তাদের নিজের ভাষা "হ্-মঁ" বলে। "হমং" শব্দটা অন্যভাবে লেখা যায় না? আমি প্রথমে "হ্মঁ" লিখলাম, কিন্তু সেটা অনেকদেরকে frighten আর confuse করতে পারে - "হ্মং"ও বলা যায়, I suppose... অথবা শুধু "মঁ" বা "মং" (ইংরেজিতে যেভাবে বলে)। কিন্তু "হমং" (which looks like two syllables) আমার কাছে ঠিক লাগছে না। আপনাদের মন্তব্য?--সামীরুদ্দৌলা ০৯:৩০, ৮ সেপ্টেম্বর ২০০৬ (ইউটিসি)

- বাংলাতে হ্ম-এর উচ্চারণে metathesis ঘটেছে, এটা বাংলায় ম+হ হিসেবে উচ্চারিত হয়, যেমন - "ব্রাহ্ম" উচ্চারিত হয় "ব্রাম্হো" হিসেবে।
সুতরাং হ্ম ব্যবহার করা উচিত নয়।
- হ্ম, ক্ষ, ক্ষ্ণ, এগুলো সাধারণ বাঙালির কাছে খুব ভীতিপ্রদ বর্ণ, কারণ এগুলো দেখে বোঝা কঠিন constituent consonant গুলি কী কী। আর শব্দের সামনে থাকলে তো কোন কথাই নেই, বাঙালি বুঝবেই না কী উচ্চারণ করবে। শব্দের শুরুতে কোন বর্ণে হসন্ত লাগানোও একেবারে alien একটা ব্যাপার। সাধারণ বাঙালি কথা বলার সময় সব সময় word-initiating হসন্তওয়ালা ব্যঞ্জনের আগে একটা vowel বসিয়ে নেয়; যেমন - স্ক্রু কথা বলার সময় হয় ইস্ক্রু, স্টেশন হয়ে যায় ইস্টিশান, ইত্যাদি।
- বাঙালি ম-এর উপরে চন্দ্রবিন্দু উচ্চারণ করবে কিনা সে নিয়েও সন্দেহ আছে। ম এমনিতেই নাসিক্য ধ্বনি, তার ওপর চন্দ্রবিন্দু আরেকটা নাসিক্য ধ্বনি, এতো নাকি গলায় কথা বলা বাঙালির ধাতেই নেই।
- আমার মতে তাই এই শিরোনামের ক্ষেত্রে "হ" আর "ম" আলাদা করে লেখা উচিত। "হ" -এর নিচে হসন্ত ও ম-এর উপর চন্দ্রবিন্দু দিলে শুদ্ধ বানান হবে ঠিকই (আমিও এরই পক্ষে), তবে আপনি ধরে নিতে পারেন বেশির ভাগ মানুষ শব্দটা হম হিসেবেই উচ্চারণ করবে, which is ok। In an encyclopedia, and in this explicit case of objectively describing the sounds of a particular language, I think we are justified in tipping the balance towards proper pronunciation. In the end, I went with মং for a few reasons: first of all, I actually found out that the (group of) language(s) is actually referred to internationally as Hmong/Mong, due to the fact that some dialects use "hm" and others use "m" for the name of the language. Considering Bengalis will not pronounce the "h" whether or not it is written (since it's way outside normal Bengali phonology), I figured we can just stick to the "Mong" pronunciation and keep it at that. Then the pronunciation of the language can be written হ্মং/মং to clarify that there are two pronunciations. I agree that initial hôshonto is ugly - which is why I went for হ্ম in the beginning (along with my general love for হ্ম) - but I agree that it is unnecessarily confusing. I'm using the ং instead of ঁ - both represent variants of the same sound in Hmong/Mong - we can stick with the more approachable ং!
