হিন্দু শব্দটি পরবর্তীতে মাঝে মাঝে ব্যবহার করা হয়েছিল কিছু সংস্কৃত লেখায় যেমন কাশ্মীরের রাজাতরঙ্গিনিসে (হিন্দুকা সি. ১৪৫০)। বিভিন্ন কবিরা হিন্দু ধর্মকে আলাদা করে ইসলাম ধর্ম (turaka dharma) থেকে ব্যাখ্যা করেছেন যেমন বিদ্যাপতি, কবির এব একনাথ[৯]। ১৬শ থেকে ১৮শ শতাব্দিতে বাংলা গৌড়িয় বৈষ্ণব লেখায় যাতে চৈতন্য চরণামৃত এবং চৈতন্য ভগবতেও একই ধরনের তুলনা করা হয়।[১০] ১৮শ শতাব্দির শেষের দিকে, ইউরোপীয় ব্যবসায়ী ও ঔপনিবেশিকরা ভারতীয় ধর্মের অনুসারীদেরকে একত্রে (একক কোন ধর্মকে নয়) হিন্দাস হিসেবে নির্দেশ করে। ঊনবিংশ শতাব্দিতে Hinduism বা হিন্দুধর্ম শব্দটি ইংরেজি ভাষায় সূচিত হয় ভারতীয়দের ধর্ম বিশ্বাস, দর্শন এবং সংস্কৃতিকে বোঝানোর জন্য। ২০১০ সালের হিসাব অনুযায়ী অনুসারীর দিক থেকে খ্রিষ্টধর্ম ও ইসলামের পর হিন্দুধর্ম পৃথিবীর তৃতীয় বৃহত্তম ধর্ম।[১১] সবচেয়ে বেশি পরিমাণ হিন্দু ধর্ম অনুসারী বাস করে ভারতে যা প্রায় ১.০৩ বিলিয়ন[১২]। অন্যান্য দেশেও হিন্দু ধর্ম অনুসারী রয়েছে যেমন নেপাল, বাংলাদেশ,চীন,মালয়েশিয়া,আর্জেন্টিনা,ব্রাজিল, পর্তুগাল, কানাডা,ওমান, সংযুক্ত আরবআমিরাত, অস্ট্রেলিয়া,নিউজিল্যান্ড,জার্মানি, কোরিয়া, নেদারল্যান্ড,পাকিস্তান, আফগানিস্তান,মালদ্বীপ, শ্রীলঙ্কা, যুক্তরাষ্ট্র, সিঙ্গাপুর, কানাডা, ইন্দোনেশিয়ার বালি দ্বীপে, ফিজি, ত্রিনিদাদ এবং টোবাগো, যুক্তরাজ্য সহ প্রায় পৃথিবীর অনেক দেশে হিন্দুধর্মাবলম্বীরা বসবাস করেন।
