বিজ্ঞান (সংস্কৃত: विज्ञान; পালি: विज्ञाण)[১] কে "চেতনা," "জীবন শক্তি," "মন"[২] বা "বিচক্ষণতা" হিসেবে অনুবাদ করা হয়।[৩]

বিজ্ঞান শব্দটি অনেক প্রারম্ভিক উপনিষদে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে, যেখানে এটি বোঝা, জ্ঞান ও বুদ্ধিমত্তার মতো শব্দ দ্বারা অনুবাদ করা হয়েছে।[৪][৫] পালি ধর্মশাস্ত্রের সুত্ত পিটকের প্রথম চারটি নিকায়, ভিন্নন হল তিনটি ওভারল্যাপিং পালি শব্দের মধ্যে একটি যা মনকে বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়, অন্যটি হল মনস ও চিত্ত।[৬][৭][৮] প্রত্যেকটি সাধারণভাবে "মন" এর জেনেরিক এবং অ-প্রযুক্তিগত অর্থে ব্যবহৃত হয়, তবে তিনটিকে কখনও কখনও সামগ্রিকভাবে একজনের মানসিক প্রক্রিয়া বোঝাতে ক্রমানুসারে ব্যবহার করা হয়।[৯] তাদের প্রাথমিক ব্যবহার অবশ্য স্বতন্ত্র।[১০]
