বাচ্চা হত্যা বলতে অতি অল্পবয়স্ক মানুষদের ইচ্ছাকৃত হত্যাকে বোঝায়। মানব ইতিহাস জুড়ে বাচ্চা হত্যার প্রথা বহুল প্রচলিত ছিল,[১]:৬১ আর দুর্বল ও প্রতিবন্ধী বাচ্চাদের উপর সম্পদ ব্যয় প্রতিরোধ করার জন্য তাদের হত্যা করা হতো। সাধারণত অপ্রয়োজনীয় বাচ্চাদের পরিত্যাগ করা হতো যাতে তারা অনাবৃত অবস্থায় মৃত্যুবরণ করে, তবে কিছু সমাজব্যবস্থায় বাচ্চাদের ইচ্ছাকৃতভাবে হত্যা করা হতো। বাচ্চা হত্যা সাধারণত বেআইনি, তবে কিছু স্থানে এই প্রথা মেনে নেওয়া হয় বা সেখানে বাচ্চা হত্যায় নিষেধ ততটা কার্যকর নয়।

বেশিরভাগ প্রস্তরযুগীয় সমাজব্যবস্থায় নিয়মমাফিকভাবে বাচ্চা হত্যা প্রচলিত ছিল, আর মধ্য ও নব্য প্রস্তর যুগে শিশুমৃত্যুর সংখ্যার অনুমান ১৫ থেকে ৫০ শতাংশের মধ্যে। ঐতিহাসিক যুগ শুরু হওয়ার পরও বেশিরভাগ সমাজব্যবস্থায় বাচ্চা হত্যা অব্যহত ছিল, যেমন অস্ট্রেলিয়া, আমেরিকা, আরব, গ্রিস, চীন, জাপান, ফিনিশিয়া, রোম ইত্য্যাদি।

খ্রিস্টীয় প্রথম সহস্রাব্দে ইউরোপ ও নিকট প্রাচ্যে বাচ্চা হত্যা নিষিদ্ধ হয়েছিল। ইসলাম ও খ্রিস্টধর্ম উভয়ই গোড়া থেকে বাচ্চা হত্যা নিষিদ্ধ করেছে। মিং রাজবংশের সময় (১৩৬৮–১৬৪৪) ছেলে বাচ্চাদের হত্যা অপ্রচলিত হয়ে গিয়েছিল, আর এক সন্তান নীতির সময় (১৯৭৯–২০১৫) মেয়ে বাচ্চাদের হত্যা যথেষ্ট প্রচলিত হয়ে গিয়েছিল। ভারতে কোম্পানি শাসনের সময় ব্রিটিশ ইস্ট ইন্ডিয়া কোম্পানি দেশে বাচ্চা হত্যা নির্মূল করার চেষ্টা করেছিল কিন্তু এতে আংশিক সাফল্য এসেছিল। ভারতের কিছু অঞ্চলে এখনও মেয়ে বাচ্চাদের হত্যা করা হয়। উন্নয়নশীল দেশে বাচ্চা হত্যা এখনও প্রচলিত, কিন্তু শিল্পোন্নত দেশে এটা বিরল।

বাচ্চা হত্যার গবেষকদের পর্যবেক্ষণ অনুসারে মাতাদের বাচ্চা হত্যা করার প্রবণতা বেশি।[২] নবজাতক হত্যার (জন্মের ২৪ ঘণ্টার মধ্যে হত্যা) বেলায় প্রায় সবক্ষেত্রে মাতারাই দোষী হয়। নবজাতক হত্যায় পিতার ভূমিকা এতোটাই বিরল যে এরকম ঘটনাকে আলাদাভাবে নথিভুক্ত করা হয়।[৩]
