খাদ্যাভ্যাস[সম্পাদনা]

এদের প্রধান খাদ্য হলো মাছ। এরা খুব সন্তর্পণে অগভীর জলাভূমির মধ্যে শিকারকে নজরে রেখে ঘুরতে থাকে আর সুযোগ বুঝে নিমেষের মধ্যে মুখে তুলে নেয়।^[১]
মাছ ছাড়াও সুযোগ সুবিধামত অনেক কিছু খেতে অভ্যস্ত। লেপার্ড ব্যাঙ, মার্কিন বুলফ্রগ, টড, স্যালাম্যাণ্ডারের মতো উভচর, ছোট কাছিম, ছোট সাপ ও বড় নাট্রিক্স গণের সাপ^[২]^[৩]^[৪] মোটামুটি প্রায় যারা ১০৫ সেমি (৪১ ইঞ্চি) মতো লম্বা হয়, লিজার্ডের মত সরীসৃপ,^[৫]^[৬]^[৭] ক্রেফিশ, চিংড়ি, কাঁকড়ার মত জলজ ক্রাস্টাশিয়ান, গঙ্গাফড়িং, ফড়িং, জলের পোকা,^[৫]^[৬]^[৭] ছোট স্তন্যপায়ী প্রাণী যেমন শ্রু, ইঁদুর, গ্রাউণ্ডেড কাঠবিড়ালি ও ছুঁচো^[৫] সব কিছু খায়। আইডাহো এক পরীক্ষায় দেখিয়েছে যে এদের খাদ্যের ২৪ থেকে ৪০ শতাংশ ভোল ছিল। তাছাড়া পেলেটে মাস্ক্রাট (ওনডাট্রা জিবেথিকাস) ও লম্বা লেজের উইজেলের (মুস্টালা ফ্রেনাটা) অবশিষ্টাংশ পাওয়া গেছে।^[৮] বিভিন্ন খবর অনুযায়ী পূর্ব কটনটেল খরগোশ (সিলভিলেগাস ফ্লোরিডেনাস) এদের খাবারের অংশ।^[৯]^[১০] কদাচিৎ কালো রেল (ল্যাটেরেলাস জামাইকেনসিস), ফালারোপ, মার্কিন ডিপার (সিনক্লাস মেক্সিকানাস), পায়েড ঠোঁট গ্রীব (পোডিলিম্বাস পডিসেপস), মার্শ টার্নের (ক্লাইডোনাইস) ছানা প্রভৃতি পাখিও খায়।^[৫]^[১১]^[১২]
