২০১২ সালে অনুমান করা হয়েছিল যে বিশ্বে ৪০ থেকে ৪২ মিলিয়ন পতিতা রয়েছে। [১] নীচে দেশের তালিকা ও প্রতিটি দেশে পতিতা হিসাবে কাজ করা লোকের সংখ্যার একটি অনুমান প্রদান করা হয়েছে৷

পদ্ধতি[সম্পাদনা]

অর্থপূর্ণ পতিতাবৃত্তির পরিসংখ্যান সংগ্রহের ক্ষেত্রে বেশ কিছু সমস্যা জড়িত। উদাহরণস্বরূপ, পথ পতিতাবৃত্তির মতো কিছু ধরনের পতিতাবৃত্তির বৃহত্তর দৃশ্যমানতা এই ফর্মের পরিসংখ্যান সংগ্রহ করা সহজ করে তোলে৷ যাইহোক, কিছু দেশে পথ পতিতাবৃত্তি অভ্যন্তরীণ পতিতাবৃত্তির তুলনায় যৌন শিল্পের অনেক ছোট অংশ। একইভাবে স্বাস্থ্য, আসক্তি এবং অন্যান্য সহায়তার প্রয়োজনে যৌনকর্মীরা কর্তৃপক্ষের কাছে পরিচিত হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা বেশি এবং তাই গবেষকদের সাথে যোগাযোগ করা সহজ, কিন্তু তারা সামগ্রিকভাবে পতিতাবৃত্তির প্রতিনিধি নাও হতে পারে। ন্যাশনাল আংলি মগস, যুক্তরাজ্যের যৌনকর্মীদের জন্য একটি সহায়তা সংস্থা, যৌন শিল্পের জন্য পরিসংখ্যান সংগ্রহ করা কঠিন করে এমন বেশ কয়েকটি কারণ চিহ্নিত করেছে, যার মধ্যে রয়েছে নিম্ন প্রতিক্রিয়ার হার, যৌন শিল্পের আকারের তুলনায় গবেষণার ক্ষুদ্র পরিসর এবং শিল্পের বৈচিত্র্য। ফলস্বরূপ প্রকাশিত পরিসংখ্যান প্রায়শই বিরোধপূর্ণ এবং প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতাপূর্ণ।
