গঞ্জিফা, গঞ্জাপা বা গাঞ্জাফা,[১] এটি তাসের একটি খেলা এবং তাসের এমন একটি প্রকার যা পারস্য এবং ভারতের সাথে সবচেয়ে বেশি সংযুক্ত। বিংশ শতাব্দীর আগে ইরানে গঞ্জিফা তাসের ব্যবহার বন্ধ হয়ে যাওয়ার পর, ভারতই ছিল এই তাস উৎপাদনকারী সর্বশেষ দেশ।[২] ওড়িশায় এর প্রচলিত রূপ হল গঞ্জপা

বর্ণনা[সম্পাদনা]

১৮২৭-১৮৪৪ সময়কালে মিশর সফরের সময় ফরাসি পর্যটক এমিলে প্রিস ডি'আভেনেস (১৮০৭-১৮৭৯) কায়রোর বাজারে কেনা হাতির দাঁতের তাসের ছবি। শৈলী ও গুণগত দিক দিয়ে তিনি সেগুলিকে ফারসি হিসেবে চিহ্নিত করেছিলেন।

গঞ্জিফার তাসগুলি বৃত্তাকার বা আয়তাকার হয়,[৩] এবং ঐতিহ্যগতভাবে এগুলি কারিগরদের হাতে আঁকা। খেলাটি মুঘল দরবারে জনপ্রিয় হয়ে উঠেছিল, এবং সেগুলি হাতির দাঁত বা কাছিমের খোলের (দরবার কালাম) মতো উপকরণে মূল্যবান পাথর লাগিয়ে জমকালোভাবে তৈরি করা হত। খেলাটি পরে সাধারণ মানুষের মধ্যে ছড়িয়ে পড়েছিল এবং তখন কাঠ, পাম পাতা, শক্ত কাপড় বা পেস্টবোর্ডের মতো সস্তা (বাজার কালাম) উপকরণ দিয়ে এগুলি তৈরি করা হত। সাধারণত গঞ্জিফা তাসের পশ্চাদপট রঙিন হয়, প্রতিটি খেলার বিভাগের আলাদা রঙ থাকে। এই তাসের বিভিন্ন প্রকার বিদ্যমান, এবং তাদের নকশা, সংখ্যা ও আকার উল্লেখযোগ্যভাবে পরিবর্তিত হতে পারে। মামলুক কঞ্জিফা এবং মহীশূরের তাস বাদ দিয়ে, প্রতিটি বিভাগে দশটি গণনা তাস এবং দুটি রাজকীয় মুখ সম্পন্ন তাস, রাজা এবং উজির বা মন্ত্রী রয়েছে। তাসের পিছনের দিকটি সাধারণত এক রঙেরই হয় এবং সেখানে কোন নকশা থাকেনা।

ব্যুৎপত্তি[সম্পাদনা]

তাসের আদি উৎপত্তির সঠিক কোন ধারণা পাওয়া যায়নি। কিন্তু যে গঞ্জিফা তাসগুলি আজ দেখা যায়, সেগুলি ইরানের উদ্ভূত বলে মনে করা হয়। প্রথম শব্দাংশটি ফারসি শব্দ 'গঞ্জ' থেকে এসেছে, যার অর্থ ধন। জেনারেল হাউটাম-শিন্ডলার স্টুয়ার্ট কুলিনকে বলেছিলেন যে 'গঞ্জিফা' শব্দের শেষ দুটি শব্দাংশ চীনা চি-পাই থেকে উদ্ভূত হতে পারে, যার অর্থ তাস।[৪][৫] এই সম্পর্কিত একটি অনুচ্ছেদে চ্যাটো ব্যাখ্যা করেছেন যে প্রথম দিকের চীনা শব্দটি ছিল 'ইয়া-পাই', যার অর্থ 'হাড়ের টিকিট, এবং 'চি-পাই' শব্দটি পরে এসেছে, যার আক্ষরিক অর্থ 'কাগজের টিকিট' (১৮৪৮:৫৮)। এই বিভিন্ন শব্দগুলি 'গঞ্জিফা'র বিভিন্ন বানান ও উচ্চারণের জন্য দায়ী হতে পারে। এই তত্ত্বগুলি অপ্রমাণিত থেকে গেছে, কিন্তু ১৮ শতকের ভ্রমণকারী কারস্টেন নাইবুর দাবি করেছিলেন যে বোম্বেতে তিনি আরবীয় বণিকদের চীনা তাস নিয়ে খেলতে দেখেছেন।[৬] ১৯ শতকে জিন লুই বার্কহার্ট মক্কা পরিদর্শন করেছিলেন এবং তিনি লিখেছিলেন যে 'প্রায় প্রতিটি আরব কফি-হাউসে তাস খেলা হয় (তারা ছোট চীনা তাস ব্যবহার করে)'।[৭]

১৬ শতকে মুঘল সম্রাটদের অধীনে ভারতে গঞ্জিফা জনপ্রিয় হয়েছিল। শব্দটি মধ্যপ্রাচ্য এবং পশ্চিম এশিয়া জুড়ে অনেক দেশে মাঝে মাঝে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে। কুয়েতে, 'জাঞ্জিফা' শব্দটি একটি সাধারণ শব্দে পরিণত হয়েছে এবং একইভাবে এটি আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে পরিচিত ফরাসি তাসে প্রয়োগ করা হয়।[৮]

  8. In Arabic and Persian, there exists also the more general word for playing cards, 'waraq' ( ورق ). This word can be found in texts that may refer to Ganjifa cards. For example in the 16th century work, the Humayun-namah, about the Mughal emperor Humayun, this term 'waraq' is used. The text describes a gambling game that was played during celebrations upon Humayun's return to Kabul in 1545. The game involved twelve players, each with twenty cards.
