গবেষকদের মতে, সাধারণ জনসংখ্যার মধ্যে নারী ও পুরুষ সমকামী, উভকামী, রূপান্তরকামী ও কুইয়ার তরুণদের আত্মহত্যার হার এবং আত্মহত্যার চিন্তা তুলনামূলকভাবে বেশি।[১] এলজিবিটি তরুণতরুণী ও অল্পবয়সীদের মধ্যে আত্মহত্যার চেষ্টার হার সবচেয়ে বেশি।[২]
বৈষম্যমূলক আইনের ধারা এলজিবিটি মানুষদের শারীরিক ও মানসিক স্বাস্থ্য এবং তাঁদের ভাল থাকার ব্যাপারে প্রচণ্ড নেতিবাচক প্রভাব ফেলে।[৩]
বিশেষভাবে যৌন বা লিঙ্গগত আক্রমণ সবক্ষেত্রে না হলেও, এলজিবিটি তরুণদের উত্যক্তকরণ অনেক আত্মহত্যায় একটি প্রভাবশালী ফ্যাক্টররূপে দেখা গেছে।[৪]
