বিস্ফোরণ মুহুর্তে স্পেস শাটল চ্যালেঞ্জার থেকে নির্গত ধোঁয়া। এই দূর্ঘটনায় এসটিএস-৫১-এল মিশনের সকল আরোহী নিহত হয়।

স্পেস শাটল চ্যালেঞ্জার দুর্ঘটনা হচ্ছে একটি মহাকাশযান সংশ্লিষ্ট দূর্ঘটনা, যা সংঘটিত হয় ১৯৮৬ সালের ২৮ জানুয়ারি। সেদিন উড্ডয়নের ৭৩ সেকেন্ড পর যান্ত্রিক সমস্যার কারণে স্পেস শাটল চ্যালেঞ্জার ভেঙে টুকরো হয়ে যায়, এবং এর আরোহী সাত জন মহাকাশচারী মারা যান। এর ধ্বংসাবশেষ পতিত হয় আটলান্টিক মহাসাগরে, যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ফ্লোরিডা উপকূলের কাছে। দূর্ঘটনটি ঘটার সময় ছিলো উত্তর আমেরিকার পূর্বাঞ্চলীয় আঞ্চলিক সময় সকাল ১১টা ৩৯ মিনিট, বিকাল ৪টা ৩৯ মিনিট (ইউটিসি)।
