দাড়ি হল কারো গাল, থুতনি, ঘাড় এবং ওষ্ঠের ওপরের অংশে গজানো চুল। সাধারণত বয়সন্ধিকালের বা বয়সন্ধিকালোত্তীর্ণ পুরুষলোকের দাড়ি গজায়। মুখমন্ডলের ওপরের ও নিচের অংশের চুলের মধ্যে পার্থক্য করতে বলা হলে দাড়ি মূলত নিচের অংশের চুলকেই বোঝায়, যার মধ্যে গোঁফ অন্তর্ভুক্ত নয়। দাড়ি সংক্রান্ত অধ্যয়ন পগনোলজি নামে পরিচিত।
ইতিহাসের পাতা থেকে জানা যায়, দাড়িবিশিষ্ট পুরুষলোককে জ্ঞান ও প্রজ্ঞার অধিকারী, পৌরুষত্বের অথবা উঁচু সামাজিক মর্যাদার অধিকারী ভাবা হত। আবার মুদ্রার অন্য পিঠে দাড়িযুক্ত পুরুষকে নোংরা, অসংস্কৃত এবং কিম্ভূত চেহারার ভবঘুরেও বিবেচনা করা হত। দাড়ির এই মর্যাদা ও অমর্যাদা সংস্কৃতি-সাপেক্ষ।

জীববিজ্ঞান [সম্পাদনা]
বয়সন্ধিকালে দাড়ি গজায়। এ সময়ে মুখমন্ডলের লোমকূপে ডিহাইড্রোটেস্টোস্টেরন এর উদ্দীপনার কারণে দাড়ি গজায়। চুলের গ্রন্থিগুলো অবস্থানের ওপর নির্ভর করে বিভিন্ন হরমোন দ্বারা প্রভাবিত হয়; ডিহাইড্রোটেস্টোস্টেরন টাক পড়াকেও প্রভাবিত করে। ডিহাইড্রোটেস্টোস্টেরন টেস্টোস্টেরন হতে নিঃসৃত হয়, যার মাত্রা বিভিন্ন ঋতুতে বিভিন্ন হয়: ফলে গ্রীষ্মকালে দাড়ি দ্রুত বাড়ে।[১]
