তুর্কিস্তান (ফার্সি: ترکستان) শব্দের আক্ষরিক অর্থ “তুর্কিদের দেশ”।

উৎপত্তি[সম্পাদনা]

তুর্কিস্তান শব্দের উৎস ফারসি। একসময় এই অঞ্চল একজন সম্রাটের দ্বারা শাসিত হলেও এই শব্দ দ্বারা কোনো একক জাতি রাষ্ট্র বোঝানো হয় না।[১] পারস্যের ভূগোলবিদরা তুর্কি জাতিসমূহের আবাসস্থল বোঝাতে সর্বপ্রথম তুর্কিস্তান শব্দের ব্যবহার করেন।[২] ১৮৫৬-১৮৫৭ সালে ইঙ্গ-পারসিয়ান যুদ্ধে পারস্যের পরাজয় ও দুর্বল হয়ে পড়ার পর মধ্য এশিয়ায় নিয়ন্ত্রণ প্রতিষ্ঠার জন্য রাজতান্ত্রিক রাশিয়া এখানে অভিযান চালায়। দক্ষিণে অগ্রসর হওয়ার সময় ১৮৬৪ সালে রুশরা তুর্কিস্তান শহর দখল করে নেয়। শহরের নামকে সমগ্র অঞ্চলের নাম বিবেচনা করার কারণে তারা নতুন বিজিত অঞ্চলের নাম তুর্কিস্তান রেখেছিল।[২][৩] বর্তমানে মধ্য এশিয়ায় তুর্কি জাতিসমূহ অধ্যুষিত অঞ্চলকে তুর্কিস্তান বলা হয়। এর মধ্যে রয়েছে আধুনিক তুর্কমেনিস্তান, কাজাখস্তান, উজবেকিস্তান, কিরগিজস্তান ও চীনের জিনজিয়াং (“চীনা তুর্কিস্তান”)।[৪][৫] অনেকে রাশিয়ার তুর্কি অঞ্চলসমূহ যেমন তাতারস্তান ও সাইবেরিয়ার কিছু অংশকে তুর্কিস্তানের অংশ হিসেবে বিবেচনা করে থাকে।
