ইংরেজ হল একটি জাতি গোষ্ঠীর নাম যারা ইংল্যান্ডে বাস করে। ইংরেজরা ইংরেজি ভাষায় কথা বলে। প্রাক-মধ্যযুগ ইংরেজ জাতি উত্তরণ হয়। তখন পুরাতন ইংরেজিতে তাদেরকে Angelcynn হিসাবে বলা হয়েছে যার অর্থ ‘ এ্যাঙ্গেলদের পরিবার’। শব্দটি এসেছে একটি প্রাচীন জার্মান এ্যাঙ্গেল জাতির নাম থেকে যারা ৫ম শতকে জার্মানি থেকে ইংল্যান্ডে অভিবাসন নিয়েছিল।^[৬] ইংল্যান্ড যুক্তরাজ্যের একটি দেশ।

ঐতিহাসিকভাবে, ইংরেজরা বেশ কয়েকটি জাতির উত্তরসূরীর- ব্রিটন এবং কিছু জার্মান উপজাতি যারা রোমানরা চলে যাওয়ার পর ব্রিটেনে বসবাস শুরু করে। যাদের মধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য ছিল, এ্যাঙ্গেল, স্যাক্সন, জুট এবং ফ্রিসিয়ান। সম্মিলিতভাবে যাদেরকে এ্যাংলো-স্যাক্সন বলা হয়। প্রথমে এই এ্যাংলো-স্যাক্সন জাতি ও পরে নরম্যান, ডেন ও অন্যান্যরা মিলে ইংল্যান্ড (প্রাচীন ইংরেজিতে ইংলাল্যান্ড) প্রতিষ্ঠা করে।

ইউনিয়ন এ্যাক্ট ১৭০৭ অনুসারে, ব্রিটিশ রাজত্ব গ্রেট ব্রিটেন কর্তৃক অধিকৃত হয়।^[৭] কালক্রমে ইংরেজ সংস্কৃতি গ্রেট ব্রিটেনের সাংস্কৃতির সাথে একিভূত হয়ে যায়। বর্তমানে অনেক ইংরেজের পূর্বপুরুষ গ্রেট ব্রিটেনের অন্য অঞ্চল থেকে এসেছে। আবার অনেকে এসেছে ইউরোপের অন্যান্য দেশ বা কমনওয়েলথ ভূক্ত দেশ থেকে। ইংরেজরা পৃথিবীতে ইংরেজি ভাষা, ওয়েস্ট মিনিস্টার পদ্ধতি, সাধারণ আইন বিভিন্ন জনপ্রিয় খেলা যেমন ক্রিকেট, ফুটবল, রাগবি লীগ, ইউনিয়ন রাগবি ইত্যাদি প্রচলন করে।^[৮] এছাড়াও ব্রিটিশ ঔপনিবেশিক শাসনামলে অনেক ইংরেজ সংস্কৃতি পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন স্থানে ছড়িয়ে পড়েছিল।
